24 and The Office Top the Emmy Awards 2006

24‘ and the US version of ‘The Office‘ were among the winners at the Emmy Awards in California last night.

Thriller series ‘24‘ was named Best Drama Series while star Kiefer Sutherland was named Best Actor.

Accepting his award, Sutherland said: “Every once in a while you’ll have an evening that just reminds you that you’re given too much and this is that evening. This experience on ’24′ has been nothing but remarkable for me.”

’24′ had been nominated on four previous occasions for Best Drama Series.

Medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ won in just one category of the 11 in which it was nominated: Best Casting for a Drama Series.

The Steve Carell-starring ‘The Office’ was named Best Comedy, but Carrell lost out on the Best Actor in a Comedy Series award to ‘Monk‘ star Tony Shalhoub.

‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ star Mariska Hargitay was named Best Actress in a Drama Series while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award for ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine’.

The HBO mini-series ‘Elizabeth I’ won nine awards, with stars Helen Mirren named Best Actress and Jeremy Irons named Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries respectively.
The awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Drama Series went to Alan Alda for ‘The West Wing’ and Blythe Danner for ‘Huff’.
Megan Mullally was named Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for ‘Will & Grace’ with Jeremy Piven winning Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for ‘Entourage’.
