A minimum of 5 gold medals—this is the target of Philippine Sports Commission chair William “Butch” Ramirez after finalizing the list of 229 athletes in 31 sports disciplines for the the 15th Asian Games set on December 1-15 in Doha, Qatar.
The gold prospects are expected to come from traditional sports that we excel internationally like boxing, wushu, taekwondo, billiards and bowling. Equestrian, diving and lawn tennis might deliver some surprises.
Despite the absence of Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante, billiards remain one of our strength.
In Wushu we have world champions Wang Wili and Rene Catalan. In bowling, we have 3-time world champion Paeng Nepomuceno who will defend the men’s doubles gold. SEA games champs Sheila Mae Perez in Diving, Gretchen Malalad and Marna Pabillore in karatedo and Harry Tañamor in boxing will also lead the delegation.
Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski will not be participating this year but veterans Toni Leviste and Danielle Cojuangco will try to defend Mikee’s equestrian gold four years ago.
