Philippine Idol Final 7: Dance Hits
November 6, 2006 by cd
Last night, the level of difficulty in the competition for the title Philippine Idol has doubled because the contestants are not just supposed to sing their heart out but also dance and move their booty. And because the theme is “dance hits”, the guest judge is no other than the dance diva herself Regine Tolentino.
So who sizzles on the dance floor? And who stumbled? (Click on the contestant’s name/song title to view the video.) Here goes:
>>> SIZZLING HOT <<<
:: Apple Chiu – Lady Marmalade ::
Judging on the singing alone, Apple’s rendition of Lady Marmalade was hot! She was able to hit the high notes considering this is a Christina Aguilera song and jazzing some “Apple” flavor in it. Pero kulang talaga ang sayaw, but hey, it’s still a singing competition and for me, because her rendition was above ok, this is a sizzling hot performance regardless of the moves.
:: Gian Magdangal – Rock DJ ::
Gian’s coolness is what makes him hot! He is the dancer of the group, and what he did with Rock DJ with ironically less dancing but more sexy struts is a statement saying: “I’m a pop star. Dancing or no dancing I’m cool!”
:: Jan Nieto – Livin’ La Vida Loca ::
Jan Nieto did his assignment well. He was told to dance, and he danced alright. Although the key was a little low at the beginning of the song, he was able to keep the energy high until he reached the chorus where he sounded better. He danced the Ricky Martin dance so hard and he succeeded in compelling the audience to dance with him. Even Mamita had a little dance with him, too!
>>> WARM <<<
Dancing is a major obstacle for big people and it has been true for Mau Marcelo when she performed Shy Guy last night. The audience know she can sing anything that’s why they are looking for the dance part instead. The judges blamed it to her weight. But there are big people who can dance. Remember Allan, the pinoy contestant in So You Think You Can Dance season 1 and Donyelle in season 2? Big people can dance if you will put your heart to the craft, and sadly for Mau, she fumbled.
:: Pow Chavez – Got To Be Real ::
This song should be Pow’s pick in the “life highlights” night, this is the message that she wants to relay—”getting real”. Performance-wise, it was just ok.
:: Ken Dingle – Signed Sealed Delivered ::
Plus points for encouraging audience participation, minus points for the wardrobe. But it’s not his fault, of course.
>>> WARMING UP <<<
:: Miguel Mendoza – Make it With You ::
Dancing proves to be Miguel’s kryptonite. His voice has a tendency to become “shaky” when he moves and last night this weakness had manifested. Considering his song choice is not even a “movable” song, it’s a sentimental ballad disco remix of some sort.
