Piolo Pascual Tops QTV’s 10 Most Exciting Young Actors List
November 8, 2006 by cd
QTV Channel 11 came up with a list recently of 10 most exciting young actors on the show Pinaka hosted by Pia Guanio. Take note that their no. 1 choice is a Kapamilya while the panel consists all of Kapuso scriptwriter, tv director, tabloid writer and show producer. Siguro naman wala nang magtataas ng kilay diyan considering na ang gumawa ng list are all Kapuso.
1. Piolo Pascual
2. Dennis Trillo
3. John Lloyd Cruz
4. Jericho Rosales
5. Patrick Garcia
6. Marvin Agustin
7. Dingdong Dantes
8. Cogie Domingo
9. Diether Ocampo
10. Carlo Aquino
Mark Herras, Richard Gutierrez, Polo Ravales, John Pratts failed to make it to the top 10.
Isah Red, a columnist of Manila Bulletin, came up with his (or her) own version of the list and here it is with the following criteria: screen presence (must be strong to keep my eyes glued on the screen); talent (at the least must show some potential if not fully developed), and last, popularity among the audience, a requirement to keep the actor working. :
1. Dennis Trillo. A veritable acting machine whose potential hasn’t been fully tapped, he is this era’s most exciting find. Given the right material (for his age and physical attributes) and an intelligent director who knows how to motivate actors, I’m pretty sure he’ll surprise us all with a performance that will be the best in years. The camera loves his face. That’s his biggest advantage over other young actors working on TV and in the movies now. From all angles, Dennis is a delight to watch on screen even in lousy movies like Pamahiin, and Txt, and vapid soap operas like Mulawin, Darna, and Majika.
2. John Lloyd Cruz. From a chubby teener, he’s grown to be a mature performer. He has a face that affects the audience in an empathic manner. All he need to become a real great actor is proper motivation to do beyond standard soap mannered acting.
3. Alfred Vargas. Great body, handsome face, and a talent waiting to be tapped are what make Alfie an exciting actor to watch. His two earlier movies (Seiko Films) only exploited his physique. In the upcoming Gigil and ZsaZsa Saturna we expect something more. Well, if the directors are intelligent enough to see beyond his aquiline nose, deep-set smiling eyes and totally toned muscles. His performance in Magpakailanman last Thursday as a guy with a sixth sense more than convinced us of his talent.
4. Richard Gutierrez. An actor whose greatest liability to be taken seriously is his good looks, Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama’s son, however, has a big potential to be a better actor than his father, if only he is allowed to be less good-looking and put on more character in his performances. He has killer smile (just like his dad in his days as a matinee idol in Sampaguita Pictures) that can break many girls’ hearts.
5. Cogie Domingo. He could have been first on my list, but his nonchalance has kept him away from work too much I almost forgot about him. Yet, Cogie’s talent is simply irresistible. He’s what I’d call a natural born actor. Despite his erratic behavior, when given a role to perform, he delivers. Now, all he need is to shore up his badly tarnished image so he can gain back his lost ground.
6. Piolo Pascual. Sadly, he has been around with Judy Ann Santos too much, he got stuck with a kind of performance that is too predictable it can be irritating. Still, Piolo regain lost sheen if only he’d try to play roles that are not as patented as what he does in soap operas.
7. Mark Herras. Beyond his shoulder-popping routine on the dance floor, he gives me the impression he can do more than be the bad-boy-of-the- dance-floor. But it seems he’s busy trying to earn a lot of money than giving his talent a serious look. I’d love to see him one day in a movie that gives justice to his being the first ultimate male survivor of the StarStruck talent search. Can Lolit Solis put him in a speechpower class. He needs it badly.
8. Sam Milby. This Filipino American seems bent on making his mark as an actor. Well, he might just turn out to be a good one. Based on his performance in Maging Sino Ka Man, the model-turned- singer-turned- actor is showing some muscles (literally) as an actor. I just wish he stops trying to speak in Tagalog with that awkward American accent. Can’t he just deliver the dialog in his first language—English? It’s ruining his moments in that soap.
9. Jason Abalos. Raw talent combined with all-Filipino good looks, this young actor should blossom into a fine performer in a couple of years. He already showed a part of it in First Day High. Even in I Wanna Be Happy, his earlier movie outing, he was stealing scenes even without opening his mouth.
10. Antonio Aquitania. He has proven himself as a comedian. But this guy seems bent for bigger things, if only his manager allows him to be more adventurous. GMA-7 shouldn’t keep him in the comedy box, because he can be a great character actor (take a closer look at those brooding eyes, the unexpressed anger in his mouth, and the energy of his well-built body that can be used as an instrument for a great performance).
