We are no longer the “kulelat” in the Southeast Asian region as far as the Asian Games is concerned because the Philippines has now two gold medals courtesy of flyweight boxer Violito Payla who beat defending champion Somjit Jongjohor of Thailand. We are now ahead of Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnam in the medal tally but still behind the 5 golds of Singapore and Malaysia and 10 golds of Thailand (Just when i thought we are the new sports leader in Southeast Asia).
Payla pounded the Thai pug with jabs from the first round. The Thai failed to counter-attack after Filipino released unrelenting punches.
After four rounds, judges scored the fight 31-15 in favor of the Filipino.
Payla had previously defeated the Thai twice in other international competitions.
The Filipino’s gold was the first for Philippine boxers who reportedly shared jerseys for their bouts.
Bantamweight Joan Tipon, meanwhile, is scheduled to fight Wednesday.
The Philippines now ranks 18th with two golds, four silvers and eight bronze medals.
