5 Theories About Sanjaya Malakar’s Success in American Idol
March 20, 2007 by cd

The dj’s of Magic 89.9, the official radio carrier of American Idol in the Philippines, keeps on blaming the Indian call centers for organizing a united voting party in favor of their very own Sanjaya Malakar. On the first results show of the semi-finals (or the Top 12 boys), Seacrest hinted that Sanjaya received the 4th largest number of votes among the 12 boys. Paul Kim and Rudy Cardenas were eliminated that time. It’s safe to assume that there were no organized Korean fanbase to keep Paul Kim in the competition; and same thing with Rudy that there were no organized Venezuelan fanbase for him.
On the second week of the semis, it was the small but skillful AJ Tabaldo and the crooner Nick Pedro to get the boot. Does it mean there were no organized Filipino fanbase for AJ and no organized Mexican fanbase for Nick? And why do i keep on making this a world competition Hehehe? But Magic 89.9’s claim that Indian Call Centers are to blame for Sanjaya’s success in American Idol might be true. India is currently the no. 1 country for American call centers (Philippines is no.2 by the way) and they (the call centers) have the privilege of calling to any US phone numbers on a regular rate.
The second theory about Sanjaya’s success is the infamous website Vote for the Worst. The Vote for the Worst website is campaigning for the contestants who the producers would hate to see winning American Idol. Many people are blaming this site for Antonella Barba’s winning streak in American Idol. After escaping two eliminations, Antonella was finally voted off in the Top 8 finals for girls. So the Vote for the Worst website changed their candidate and it’s now Sanjaya Malakar. And did you know that this site is now immensely popular it’s now ranked 28,052 by Alexa?!!!
The 3rd theory about Sanjaya’s success is the support of Howard Stern. Yup, the “King of all Media” has called Sanjaya his favorite contestant and he was allegedly encouraging his listeners to vote for the 17 year-old Indian-American. Stern’s endorsement is now being blamed by American Idol fanatics who seemed to constantly looking for who’s to point the finger to.
The 4th theory is the endorsement of Top Filipino blogsite about American Idol at siyempre si Kuya Rickey yan. O kuya Rickey, extra ka dito ha hehehe. At say niyo, hindi nagkakalayo ang Alexa ranking ni Kuya Rickey sa Vote for the Worst website. Even before the show started last January, even before mag-perform sa stage ang top 24 finalists, Kuya Rickey has already picked his favorite and the lucky contestant is no less than Sanjaya Malakar.
The 5th and last theory is also my theory na rin (Panay ang taglish ko a, sensya na sa mga kanong dumadalaw dito). American Idol and any other idol competitions elsewhere are not just about talent. It’s not a 100% singing competition. It’s all about personality, too, that’s why it’s called “Idol”. People are voting not necessarily because of the performance but because they are “starstruck” by the awesome personality of the contestant.
Every season there’s a below-average singer who gets through the finals but it’s their “likable” personality that’s winning hearts. The judges might hate them but the people who admire them will save them. And it’s because people can relate to them. Remember Jasmine Trias? Loved her.

America has given him a lot of chances already to prove his worth but he blew it. I’m sure he will be eliminated on Thursday.

There are plenty of factors to why Sanjaya is still there. To be honest, I am calling in and voting for him as I type this. Not only is he appealing to the younger audience due to his age and personality, but people also like him because he has a positive attitude. He may get bad reviews from the judges sometimes but he just keeps smiling.

1st of all – Indian call centres receive call and do not make calls.
2 – Any call made outside of a call centre is heavily monitored.
Its impossible to make such an assumption that people from India are calling in for him. People of India hate him and we want him to lose and get the F#$% out of the American Idol show. We dont want him to win and no one from India or noone Indian in America is actually voting for him.
3. Thirdly – He is not even Indian. He is American. Why do American people segregate people “in its GREAT MELTING POT” by classifying them from what is their mother or father country. Remember all of us are migrants here.
4. I think more Americans (white/black/Asians/Latinas)are voting for him than Indians in America because America and Americans always recognize
American is and will always be the land of dreams who make it by swimming upstream. We wish the best guy to win.

There arent enough ‘Indian’ ppl in America to keep him in. Its prob just the little girls of various backgrounds keeping him in the competition…..

There’s no sense of watching the result night. It’s getting frustrating week by week. I only watch the performance night now because I really look forward to hear from Melinda, Jordin, Lakisha, Blake, Chris (and Stephanie, Sabrina and AJ when they were still there). I think America have lost the real purpose of the existence of the show by allowing more eligible talents to be voted out and allowing someone who even in the very start of top 24 has no business of being there. On the other hand, there’s no one to blame here but the judges who placed Sanjaya on the top 24. There are far more better talents than him even during the hollywood elimination. Yes he has talents but not for AI. Blame yourself Simon… the judges have made the AI one of the most embarrassing ang disappointing show of this year… I really suggest that you quit if Sanjaya wins..

i love the way sanjaya sings more than anyone in that contest including jordin. everyone else shreiks when they sruggle to hit notes his voice is soft ,and always on key easy listening . of course i grew up in an time,ew up in an era when music was more than screaming or making odd noises. you all will realize when you are older what music should sound like melodic. everytime sanjaya sang i hummed his song all week no one else ddid this to my subconscious mind.
