Janina San Miguel and the Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Question and Answer Portion

March 9, 2008 by cd   | 1,448 Views

Check out the most entertaining part of Bb. Pilipinas 2008, the question and answer portion. Based from the questions prepared for them by the judges, one contestant said she would like to emulate President Macapagal Arroyo, another one would like to do Mother Theresa and the answer of Janina San Miguel, who eventually won Bb. Pilipinas World, is a classic that could go viral and surpass the interview boo boos of Miss Teen South Carolina Lauren Caitlin Upton.

Watch it after the jump…

    To: Eve G.

Ive read your lines profoundly and have noticed your kind heart in reassessing english mistake as minor and the beauty as the foremost element in a beauty contest. I do appreciate to read your sentiments towards very dissappointed posters here. But perhaps we have to put the issue in place. This is a beauty contest and not a fashiion Show or Model of sort contest. And to stress the point of the ego that was hurt considering that we, filipinos, start to learn english from the primary to university level. So, the expectations here is high and that should be taken seriously by any judges picked by this pageant. She is a Mass Communication graduate. This protest showed how literate the filipinos are and how valuable “good education” to this race. We glorify beauty in its place but would want to crown it with a healthy share of brains. Knowing the filipino culture, it does justify as to why they can love a not so pretty women yet theyre in power! Brains or Education is very important to us. Everyone strive for it. And as a proud race, we want to be good screeners of a title holder reperesenting our beloved country to MISS WORLD, which of course does have a Question and Answer portion, right??

Secondly, Ms Janina knew this will happen. Nobodys Perfect, we agree. But Criticisms might help her, challenge her to screen herself well few months before the bigger, international Pageant!
Again, this has to be taken seriously. Whatever happens, win or lose..we, filipinos do not wish to be tagged as stupid -pretty women of the world or non-sense. We do know shes not stupid but her A & Q was ridiculous.

We may question the integrity and qualifications of the Board of Judges as well. Again, another challenge for the Pageants future Event to re-think their Screening Process. English is our national languange, therefore, it is a must to answer an english question with a primary basic sentence structure and correct tenses. Her beauty and Poise couldnt be a catastrophy anyway. The way said or spoke wasnt either a big mistake. Her English and her answer DID!

where are the real, professional, qualified board of judges?
their pick is as good as they are!! basta, nakakaawa naman si janina, a pretty infant thrown out on fire with speech inabilities!
by the way, did she answer the question?

    Re: Eve G’s comment

“The answer to the question may be important but what was essential was simply how she said it.”
Ehr… Uhm… from what I have read and seen, people are reacting to both things: her answer and how she said it. In fact, how she said it (which is very badly) seems to be what’s causing most of the ruckus.

She answered with sincerity and poise over and above her embarrassment and lack of English skills.
I agree with the “sincerity” part, the “trying” part (oh, yes; she was trying) but not the “poise” part. She was a mess. Admit it.

“It’s unfortunate that the pageant officials do not advise the girls properly on how to best present themselves. They, among many, seem to propagate that the ability to speak English is a must, and yet allow these girls to pass the screening.”
I agree up to some extent. If Janina, during screening, was as bad as she was at that crucial Q&A, she should not have passed the screening test. However, isn’t it the standard practice that pageant officials just usually lay down the rules and the criteria for judging then leave it up to the contestants and their respective coaches to work out a strategy?

“Almost every girl in the top 10 mispronounced words and had their tenses all over the place.”
But that’s like saying 100 pesos is the same as 1,000,000 pesos. Both P100 and P1,000,000 are money but they have distinct values. Suffice it to say that Janina messed up in a really BIG way that she put all the other finalists in the shade (and not in a good way, mind you).

“They gave it to Janina because despite all of that, she was charming and she was honest.”
Charming? That may be so, but is that reason enough to give her the crown? Aw, C’mon! That’s like saying that given a choice between two job applicants - one very smart but not so charming and one not-so-smart but very charming - the employer should give the job to the latter because she has a more likeable personality. Aren’t we supposed to judge based on merit?

“It was much more gallant than speaking in perfect English but coming out with utter nonsense – to those of you who are comparing her for the worst to Ms.Teen South Carolina, watch and compare again, you may rethink your stance.”
Uh… but isn’t she guilty of both gaffes? She spoke in bad English and she also spoke nonsense. Ms. Tan was asking her to enlighten the panel about the role that her family played. She was not asking about how important she thinks her family is. As for Janina being compared unfavorably to Ms. South Carolina, well you’re right. They are about at the same level. They both did very badly.

“The amount of hate and put-downs here is quite surprising, if not a downright testament to the Filipinos very well known crab mentality. Majority of the comments are incredibly unkind. It’s that attitude of sitting by the sidelines and commenting with such misplaced passion- but with no action- that prevent Filipinos as a people from growing.”
Yup, I can agree with you that majority of the comments are unkind. However, they are just reacting to what they perceive to be anomalous. And you must admit, the fact that people are protesting Janina’s victory is actually a sign of maturity. It is a sign that the Filipino people do have standards!

“We need more people like Janina San Miguel, who despite her limitations, braves the challenges of the world to better herself. There’s nothing “bobo” in that at all.”
Yes, we may need more people who are willing to “brave the challenges of the world” to better themselves. And yes, there’s nothing “bobo” in that. But whoever said Janina was “bobo” because of that anyway? She seemed “bobo” (note the operative word: seemed) because she failed to answer the question she has been asked.

Please don’t make it seem like Janina’s detractors are just like some crabs pulling the prize crab - Janina - down (remember your reference to crab mentality?). Janina is no prize crab who’s on top of the crab heap that other crabs might want to pull down. (What an analogy, huh? I just can’t resist). She is simply a Bb. Pilipinas candidate who won a title that she has not been able to show she deserves.

I am not saying that Janina San Miguel has no good points. What I am saying is that she does not have what it takes to be the Philippines’ representative to the Ms. World pageant.

If you’re baffled by most of the people’s reactions, think how you would react if a mediocre student - someone who has shown no merit throughout the schoolyear - becomes class valedictorian and all because she is, er, charming. :)
