Oprah Winfrey is the Most Generous Star

The Giving Back Fund named 30 Most Generous Celebrities and talk-show mogul Oprah Winfrey topped the list.

This is another laurel for Oprah as she was also named the highest-paid TV celebrity by Forbes earlier this year and she also made it to the list of the World’s Most Powerful Women.

The Oprah Winfrey Foundation and Oprah’s Angel Network spent a whopping $50.2 million in 2007 on education, health care, and advocacy for women and children worldwide.

Winfrey is a former Bob Hope Humanitarian Award winner, but her girls’ academy in South Africa made headlines last year after a former dormitory matron was charged with abusing students.

Also making it to the Top 5 are:

2. Herb Alpert – trumpeter and A&M Records co-founder. His Herb Alpert Foundation spent $13 million on education.

3. Barbra Streisand – Hollywood diva. The Streisand Foundation spent $11 million in 2007 to the environment, women’s issues, civil rights, AIDS research and advocacy.

4. Paul Newman – Veteran actor. He gave $10 million to the Scholarship for Kenyon College, his alma mater.

5. Mel Gibson – Australian actor and Oscar-winning director. He gave $9.9 million to the Holy Family Church in Malibu, California.

The Giving Back Fund is a group that seeks to encourage philanthropy.
