Valerie Concepcion to Star in ABS-CBN Soap ‘Pat is Tin’
July 8, 2009 by cd
Valerie Concepcion will finally have her own lead role in an upcoming afternoon soap on ABS-CBN called “Pat is Tin” (or Pat si Tin).

Valerie will play the role of Tin, whose body will be used by the soul of Pat after a tragic accident. Rez Cortez’s daughter, Cai Cortez, will play the role of Pat.
Valerie is thankful at the same time challenged with the new soap given to her by ABS-CBN. She’s giving her 100% to keep up with the character specially that she needs to imitate the character of Pat, the way she talks and walks, etc.
This is also the reason why Valerie is working out to lose more weight. She doesn’t want to disappoint the management and the televiewers because this is her first starring role in a teleserye since she transferred to the kapamilya network.

FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo Updated July 07, 2009 12:00 AM
Utang na loob is something that most young stars today don’t have and, frankly speaking, it’s one trait that, specifically, Angel Locsin should learn from senior stars like Sharon Cuneta who stays long and strong in the showbiz (rat)-race because she knows how to look back and acknowledge the value of gratitude.
That’s Regal Matriarch Mother Lily Monteverde’s simple message to today’s young stars (again, specifically Angel Locsin): Have a sense of gratitude.
“Sharon became a Megastar not only because she is a talented singer-actress, but because she is loyal and knows how to honor a commitment, marunong tumanaw ng utang na loob,” Mother Lily asserts.
Sharon is the prized talent of Viva Films, Regal’s arch rival in the 1980s, but Mother Lily continued to nurture the dream of working with Mega someday. “I had a long-standing offer for her to do a movie with Regal.”
Now, the timing is just right for Mega and Mother Lily to work together in Mano Po 6: My Love, Regal’s entry in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. Sharon even agreed to appear as “guest” in another Regal movie, Oh, My Girl! (OMG) which stars Judy Ann Santos and Ogie Alcasid.
Now, who would play Sharon’s daughter in Mano Po? Could it be Angel Locsin or Kim Chiu?
“If you ask me, Sharon can carry a movie on her own,” Mother Lily said, “and she doesn’t need support from today’s crop of stars.”
The truth is that Mother Lily felt slighted when Angel reportedly declined an offer to co-star in Mano Po 6, citing her “exclusive” contract with Star Cinema.
“Angel was one of my babies once,” Mother said. “As her mother, I got hurt because she had a commitment with me to do three more movies. But still I let go of this issue because I want her to grow. I also didn’t want to rock the boat because of my friendship with ABS-CBN bosses Genny and Gabby Lopez, Freddie Garcia, Charo Santos and Cory Vidanes. Malalim ang aming pinagsamahan.”
Mother Lily has a legal right to “force” Angel to fulfill her commitment to Regal but she’s not suing and just waiting for divine justice to be rendered.
No hard feelings towards the ABS-CBN/Star Cinema people either, Mother Lily said.
That’s one thing she has with Sharon: Marunong makisama.

TELEVISION Dwarf ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. wants regulators to suspend rival GMA Network, Inc.’s operations in Benguet, claiming the latter has failed to correct signal interferences in certain parts of Batangas.
In a filing before the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC), ABS-CBN said GMA Network operations in Benguet continue to cause channel interference in a number of towns.
The Lopez-led firm first complained of the interference on June 11, 2008, blaming GMA Network’s Channel 10 (DZEA-TV) in Benguet.
The GMA Network TV station at Tuba in Mt. Sto. Tomas, Benguet has authorized transmission power of 20 kilowatts, while ABS-CBN is authorized to operate a five-kilowatt TV station (DZAD-TV) in Mt. Banoy, Batangas. Both have the same frequency of Channel 10.

GMA Network, the Philippines’ leading free-to-air media broadcast company, has expanded its Omneon Spectrum server systems to establish a streamlined file-based workflow at its Manila multichannel playout facility.
GMA Network uses a Spectrum media server system to support its Apple Final Cut Pro edit workflow, and the company’s addition of a mirrored Spectrum playout system enables fast transfer and direct playback of QuickTime files generated by the Apple edit system without any rewrapping or transcoding.
The Spectrum server’s open architecture supports tight video format integration with Final Cut Pro, allowing finished content such as commercials and promos to be exported from edit stations to the Spectrum system using industry-standard file protocols over GigE.
Because the media server supports QuickTime files natively, working with a DV25 QuickTime Reference format, the finished segments can be transferred and played out from the server immediately with no additional processing.

MA Network Inc., the Philippines’ leading broadcast company, may exceed growth expectations this year, its president and chief executive said, a day before its Wednesday stockholder’s meeting.
Expansion is expected to come from the continued high ratings of its television programs, subscriber growth in its international TV channels, improved revenues from DZBB, its radio business, and QTV, its sister TV channel, GMA Network’s Felipe L. Gozon Jr. said.
He made this announcement during a general assembly attended by company employees on Tuesday.
The company that runs the country’s top free television channel may even expand by as much as 25 percent this year, Gozon added.
Besides being higher than this year’s growth goals of 18 percent, Gozon’s estimate is also bigger than its five-year targets.
In last year’s April briefing, company executives expect GMA Network to grow by 20 percent every year for a five year period.

The Philippines’ leading broadcast company announced that it paid more than a billion pesos in corporate income taxes, an amount that is nearly equal to its rival’s earnings last year.
GMA Network Inc., which runs the country’s first and third-ranking free TV channels, paid P1.106 billion in corporate income tax in 2008, chief financial officer and senior-vice president for corporate services Felipe S. Yalong said in a statement.
The amount does not include other taxes paid for by the network including value added tax (VAT), withholding tax, among others, the company said in a statement.
“GMA leads in fulfilling its responsibilities as a corporate citizen as our corporate income tax almost equals our biggest competitor’s net income for 2008,” Yalong said.
The company’s rival, Lopez-led ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. reported a nine percent increase in net income to P1.38 billion last year. The increase was attributed to higher revenues from airtime and direct sales, which rose by 12 percent to P22.3 billion.
For its part, GMA Network Inc. earned P2.369 billion in 2008, three percent higher than the previous year, thanks to increased airtime revenues from TV and radio.
The company also produces and broadcasts radio programs in 16 cities and one municipality across the Philippines on its wholly-owned network of 24 radio stations and one minority-owned radio station.
The company recently declared a cash dividend of P1.7 billion, equal to 70 percent of its 2008 net income.
Stockholders as of April 21, 2009 are entitled to receive 35 centavos for each share held which will be payable on May 11, the company said during an analysts’ briefing earlier this month.
The dividend payout is 40 percent higher than the 25 centavor dividend issued in 2008.
GMA Network has established itself as the most profitable broadcast company in the country for the past years with its 2008 net income being P1 billion higher than its rival’s net profit for the same year, the company’s statement said.

GMA Network Inc. remained confident of meeting its first half profit goals after various companies continued to spend for advertising and promotion.
Higher revenues, a slight increase in expenses, and improving international business operations are expected to drive the company’s net income of P1.4 billion for the January to June period.
GMA Network, mega Luzon’s dominant television station, is targeting a 22 percent increase in its bottomline to P2.8 billion this year from P2.3 billion in 2008.
“The second quarter is a good quarter for us. In the first five months, there was a 22-percent increase in revenues from the same period in 2008,” said Felipe Yalong, the company’s chief finance officer and senior vice president for corporate services, at the sidelines of the Media Industry Briefing of the Philippine Stock Exchange in Ortigas, Pasig City.
Costs were also contained at three percent while its international operations have also “increased,” Yalong said.
Advertisements especially coming from the consumer-oriented sectors such as food companies have begun to spend again on promotions and television commercials, he said.
Companies “started realizing to spend again” after seeing that “the Philippines is not that affected by the global recession,” said Yalong.
Confidence in the ability of Filipinos to spend came from the stability of foreign exchange rate, he said.
“BPOs (business process outsourcing sectors) contribute to the country’s dollar revenues,” he added.
With the onset of the election period, revenues from “political advocacies” in the January to May period amounted to about P180 million, Yalong said.
Although the company has already increased advertising rates by about 10 percent this year, it may hike fees further, Yalong said. He refused to elaborate.

ABS-CBN airs UAAP on high-definition
Philippine sports finally enter the digital era as ABS-CBN begins its high-definition (HD) test broadcast of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines’ (UAAP) basketball games this Saturday and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on Monday on Balls HD (SkyCable Channel 166).
According to ABS-CBN Sports Head Peter Musngi, it will only be a matter of time before ABS-CBN starts airing boxing, billiards, and even non-basketball games of UAAP and the NCAA on HD.
“We’re bringing the UAAP to the digital age. With HDTV, local viewers can now experience what sports fans around the world already enjoy — wide-screen and crystal clear picture quality, fluid motion, and digital sound. HDTV is apt for sporting events and it is a perfect fit for avid sports viewers who want to see all the action,” said Musngi.
High-definition TV (HDTV) is the latest standard in TV technology, which is already experienced in countries across the United States, Europe and Asia.
As the first and only local network with a full HD OB van, ABS-CBN will mark the first time in Philippine television history to broadcast a locally-produced program and a live event on high-definition.
Balls HD (SkyCable channel 166) will air the live telecast of the UAAP games on HD from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, while NCAA games on HD will air every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The primetime telecast of the games will be at 8 p.m. for UAAP and 10 p.m. for NCAA on the said days.
There will also be live standard broadcast coverage of the UAAP and the NCAA on Studio 23 on the same schedules. Replay of the games will follow on the same days on Balls Channel (Skycable Channel 34) on primetime beginning 8 p.m. for UAAP and 10 p.m. for NCAA.
“UAAP and NCAA on HD” are available to all SkyCable subscribers with an HD box, which decodes SkyCable’s HD signal
