		<description>The Bottom Of The Barrel

Nandito Ako…Nagmamahal Sa ‘Yo presents a familiar formula: song for a title, two young stars presented as a “love team,” and more than one montage. This formula has never produced the greatest films, but Nandito Ako…Nagmamahal Sa ‘Yo lowers that bar even further, dragging it down into a bottomless pit of incoherence and ridiculousness. In a year of many terrible films, this movie still stands out as one of the worst.

Tata (Aljur Abrenica) lives with his mother (Ana Capri) in Quiapo, barely eking out a living, struggling to pay for tuition and medicine for his mother’s sickness. In a fit of desperation, Tata’s mother steals some money and takes Tata to her hometown of Bohol. There, Tata is finally introduced to his father, who is reluctant to accept Tata as his son. Nonetheless, Tata is welcomed to the family by his new brother (Baron Geisler). But things get complicated when he meets his brother’s fiancé Steph (Kris Bernal) and immediately falls in love with her. With her groom-to-be busy with other things, Steph finds herself spending a lot of time with Tata, leading her to become confused about her emotions.

The script is riddled with flaws, but I feel that the main flaw lies in the fact that the love triangle isn’t very interesting. Love triangles can only really work if the story presents two viable options. The difficulty of the choice in the triangle is what creates tension in the story. But this movie goes out of its way to show us that a) Steph and Tata are perfect for each other, and b) Tata’s new brother is a philandering, drunk jerk. The right choice is clear from the very start, which makes Steph’s constant indecision a real annoyance. It makes her character seem blind and stupid, which in turn makes it difficult to root for her. Beyond the terminal flaw of this film, the script is just generally terrible, filled with lines that no human would ever say, and situations drawn from an alternate reality where common sense and human compassion has been replaced with plot devices. All the clichés are there, including two iterations of the girl tripping and falling into the arms of her leading man. The filmmaking is typical of the commercial local romantic film, which is to say, it’s pretty bad as well. What most commercial productions seem to lack is a sense of restraint, an instinct for scaling back in order to provide some contrast in scenes. This movie cranks everything up to 11 right from the very start, assailing audiences with an overworked score, overwrought scenes, and overstuffed shots. And while all this is going on, basic technical details fall short of any reasonable standard. The movie is a pain to watch. One of the montages looks like something you’d see on a videoke screen. I don’t know how anyone could have thought that the scene was actually worth committing to film.

The acting is generally bad as well, though I find it difficult to blame the actors. They deliver their lines with gusto, but the lines completely fail them. The sentences are so unnatural that it’s difficult to imagine anyone delivering those lines in any way that would seem natural. Handicap aside, Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal aren’t the most exciting actors on screen, even the most sincere moments coming off as artificial. Baron Geisler provides the usual bravado, but at this point it almost feels like sleepwalking.

Nandito Ako…Nagmamahal Sa ‘Yo does pretty much everything wrong. It’s actually kind of amazing how much it gets wrong, considering that it comes from a major production house and a seasoned director. One would think that all that experience in filmmaking would at least produce a semi-watchable film. This film is obviously a product of years of lowering standards, of the decreasing worth of art and story in an endlessly cynical industry. All that experience has added up to one of the worst films of the year.
