Harry Shum Jr., A.K.A. ‘The Other Asian’ from Glee, is Here in Manila

Harry Shum, Jr., best known as "The Other Asian" from Glee, is here in Manila!

If you are among the avid followers of Glee (the sensational tv series from Fox), then you know the character Mike Chang, otherwise known as “The Other Asian,” the football player who joins the Glee Club.

Mike Chang is portrayed by Harry Shum Jr., a young American dancer and actor. He’s been part of the dance films such as Stomp the Yard, You Got Served and Step Up 2: The Streets. He is currently part of the musical-comedy television show, Glee.

Harry Shum, Jr. was born in Limon, Costa Rica on April 28, 1982. His father is from Fujian province, China, and his mother was born in Hong Kong. Yup, he is not pinoy as we are expecting him to be but nevertheless, Asians are being represented in the breakthrough tv series of 2009.

He states, “I feel I have the best of so many worlds. I speak Chinese and Spanish. Spanish is actually my first language before I learned Chinese and English”. He started dancing with his high school Dance Company team and continued his career in San Francisco, California under several different studios.

Shum launched his career as the only male dancer on BET’s Comic View in 2002 and has continued his dancing career from there. He was also one of the lead dancers with stars such as Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, and Jessica Simpson. He was a silhouette for the now-famous iPod commercials, as well. He will be seen next in the film Step Up 3D, scheduled to be released next year.

Harry is currently spending his vacation in Manila. While in the country, Harry did a photoshoot with Candy magazine for a feature about him in the upcoming issue. His short message for Pinoy fans of the show: “Thank you for watching [Glee] everyone and…mahal ko kayo!”
