ABS-CBN Sweeps 6th USTv Students Choice Awards

ABS-CBN once again dominated the USTv Student’s Choice Awards for the 6th straight year by bagging 19 out of 28 awards for its outstanding and values-oriented programs and personalities.

Primetime princess Kim Chiu received her first best actress award as she was chosen the Students Choice of Actress in a Daily Soap Opera for her performance as Audrey in “Tayong Dalawa,” which also emerged victorious that night as it took home the Students Choice of Daily Local Soap Opera award (CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE PICTURES).

Zaijian “Santino” Jaranilla also for his share of firsts when he was recognized not as a child actor, but as an actor for the very first time, winning the Students Choice of Actor in a Daily Soap Opera. The crowd cheered loudly as Zaijian personally accepted the award with his co-nominee Gerald Anderson carrying him.

A special citation, on other hand, was awarded to the phenomenal hit primetime series “May Bukas Pa” for effectively promoting and strengthening Catholic values to its young audience.

Meanwhile, Pop princess Sarah Geronimo proved to have the full support of her fellow Thomasians as she was recognized as the Student’s Choice of Local Music Video Performer for two consecutive years now.

Other entertainment programs who won the students’ votes include “George and Cecil” for Students Choice of Situational Comedy, “Maalaala Mo Kaya” for Drama program, “ASAP 09” for Talk Variety program, “Showbiz News Ngayon (SNN)” for Entertainment News program, “The Singing Bee” for Game show, “Boys Over Flowers” for Foreign Soap Opera, “Naruto” for Full Animated program, and “Kape’t Pandasal” for Catholic program.

For the News and Current Affairs group, Korina Sanchez won the Students’ Choice for Female-News and Current Affairs Host; Ted Failon for Male-News and Current Affairs Host, “TV Patrol World” for Local News and Current Affairs program, and “Matanglawin” for Educational Program.

ABS-CBN’s subsidiary Studio 23 also contributed to the Kapamilya domination in UST as it took home its 6th consecutive win in the Public Affairs program category for “Y-Speak” hosted by Bianca Gonzalez, and its airings of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) games for the Students Choice of Sports program.

The Kapamilya spirit even grew stronger during that night when ABS-CBN brought its top-rating morning talent show “Showtime” live on stage with hosts Kim Atienza, Jugs, and Vice Ganda, and two of its finalists who performed and help simulate the “Showtime” feel on UST’s jam-packed Medicine Auditorium.

Among the other Kapamilya performers were Erik Santos, Gigger Boys’ AJ Perez, Robi Domingo, Dino Imperial, Aaron Villaflor, and Sam Concepcion, and the “The Singing Bee’s” Songbees which include Apple Chiu, OJ Mariano, Michael Cruz, and MC Castro.

The USTv Student’s Choice Awards is an award giving body spearheaded by the Office of the Secretary General of the University of Santo Tomas, which will celebrate its 400th year by 2011. Currently on its 6th year, it aims to give recognition to programs and personalities that promote Thomasian values and in harmony with the Catholic teachings.
