German Moreno Hosts ‘Pinoy Cine Klasika’ on QTV-11

German "Kuya Germs" Moreno revisits local silver screen's colorful years with Pinoy Cine Klasika.

While computer-generated imaging, animation and 3D are the latest trends in filmmaking, old movies in black and white circa the ‘60s still generate remarkable interest among Pinoys. Many look forward to watching the likes of Rosemarie Sonora, Rosa Mia, Rebecca del Rio, Rita Gomez, Jose Mari Gonzalez, Pepito Rodriguez and Dindo Fernando once again on the small screen.

Thus, Q-11 gave in to requests of Pinoys here and abroad who expressed their wish to view the good old movies again (they made their wishes known through Facebook and e-mail) by coming up with Pinoy Cine Klasika. The series will air beginning April 4 at 2 p.m. German Moreno hosts.

“This is an opportunity to showcase classic movies especially the ones where I learned so many things not just in acting but about the (ins and outs of) industry as well,” says German who started his career in Sampaguita Pictures.

A former sidewalk vendor, German relates how Mama Nene Vera-Perez offered him an acting career when the Sampaguita matriarch saw his talent while he was hosting a show. He also tried his hand in directing during the time of Susan Roces and Amalia Fuentes. The experience gave him ample knowledge and instilled in him the attitude an actor should possess.

“Professionalism is key to longevity. That’s why when GMA 7 trusted me to handle shows such as Germ’s Special, GMA Supershow and That’s Entertainment, I made it a point to share to them (artists) what I have learned,” he shares. “Discipline is also very important in an artist either in film or on TV. Di naman ako sa nangungutya pero iba ang natutunan ng mga bata noon kumpara sa mga bata ngayon.”

Marichu “Manay Ichu” Maceda agrees.

She says, “Our films are gentler and most of them impart values. Our cenaculo and zarzuela contained lots of Filipino values which helped the young take to heart good traits. The outlook in life was much better then. Ngayong modern age masyadong magulo ang mundo.”

Actors then, she adds, were disciplined. They came ahead of call time. They were well-prepared — from their outfit to their dialogue.

Today’s generation will see 50 old Sampaguita films that carry value-laden stories with stars of yesteryear breathing life to the various characters who remain memorable to this day.

Lilibeth Vera Perez-Nakpil relates how they painstakingly tried to save the remaining films left under their care. Fortunately, Sampaguita has preserved many of its films and Nakpil appeals to those who might have copies of other films like Rubia Servios and Pito ang Asawa Ko.

Pinoy Cine Klasika will debut on Easter Sunday (April 4) featuring the movie Dance-O-Rama starring Susan Roces, Jose Mari Gonzales, Rosemarie Sonora, Pepito Rodriguez, and Dindo Fernando.

Succeeding films to be shown are Bituing Marikit (April 11), Rosemarie Sonora, Pepito Rodriguez and German Moreno‘s Bahay Kubo Kahit Munti (April 18), and the Dolphy, Panchito, Susan Roces, and Jose Mari Gonzalez starrer, Beatnik (April 25).
