Producers of ‘Rosario’ Put MMFF Ruling Into Question

December 28, 2010 by

Cinemabuhay is disappointed with the results of the recently concluded awards night of the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Despite some changes that were implemented to improve the Metro Manila Film Festival, this year’s edition became as controversial as the previous ones.

These changes include a) the box-office results are no longer a factor in choosing the Best Picture and b) Only the top three nominees/contenders will be named in each category.

These new rules did not receive any criticism until the awards night happened last December 26 when “Rosario” lost the Best Picture award to “Ang Tanging Ina Mo, Last Na ‘To” and Albert Martinez and Jennylyn Mercado were snubbed of the Best Director and Best Actress nomination respectively.

The producers of the groundbreaking film expressed their disappointment.

In an e-mail to Yahoo! Southeast Asia, “Rosario” producer JoAnn C. Banaga put the nomination process into question:

“CINEMABUHAY and STUDIO 5 are not happy with the nomination process,” Banaga said. “The big question here is — How could the director of a RATED A movie not even get a nomination? Rosario got highly rated by the Cinema Evaluation Board composed of movie experts…who were the judges of the filmfest? And how could the MMFF change their rulings and just announce the top 3 nominees when in the past years all entries had nominations in each category? When did they change that ruling, overnight lang? We are not saying Ai Ai is not deserving of the award but how can Jennylyn not be nominated at all? Hindi ba siya as deserving as Ai Ai? Disappointing!”

Edwin Lacierda, the chairman of the MMFF Board of Jurors, said he was happy and satisfied with the selection of winners.

“Yes. The members of the board of judges came from different sectors part of them mostly from the film industry. It was chosen based from the appreciation of each member. I think the process was very democratic, so it seems like the public also is in agreement with the choices of the winners,” Lacierda said.

He also added that the results of the awards night were based on the assessment of the board of jurors.

Aside from Lacierda, other members of the board of jurors include Butch Francsico, Ricardo Tropeo, Deedee Sytangco, Robert Arevalo, Emmanuel Borlaza, May Paner, Maria Baby Villegas, Arnold Cabaluna, who is a public school teacher from Mandaluyong City, Justin Binos, a student from Makati City, and Newton Medina, a bus driver from Muntinlupa City.

It will be recalled that in the 2006 MMFF, a similar controversy happened. Enteng Kabisote 3 bested Star Cinema’s Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo for Best Picture. When Malou Santos, producer of Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo accepted the 2nd Best Picture award for their entry, she’s a little disappointed and stated in her speech that she believes KKK is THE best picture.

The MMFF organizers explained that part of the criteria in selecting the Best Picture was the box-office success of the film that’s why Enteng Kabisote 3 won. The Vic Sotto starrer was the top-grossing film on the first week of MMFF that year. However after the awards night and upon completion of the MMFF screening, KKK has outgrossed Enteng Kabisote 3. No changes happened for the Best Picture winner though.

I’ve watched both ROSARIO & TANGING INA(LAST) and I swear to GOD, JENNELYN is at her best and she deserve better recognition than AI AI DELAS ALAS whose performance or acting in this film is just the same as before—no changes—wala na ba syang alam na ibang acting…actually it’s OVER ACTING. likewise how could this be a Best Picture, there’s so many loopholes in the story. I’ve also watch the awards night….wondering why everytime TANGING (LAST) nomination called, PINOFOCUS ANG MUKHA NI KRIS SA TV SCREEN. WHY? DAHIL BA NA PAMBAYAD SA UTANG NA LOOB (okay lng sana kung maganda ang mukha, mukha naman beho beho) kaya next time, I wont watch MMFF awards night UNLESS these MMFF will be handled by the right people in showbiz and not MGA BOBONG POLITICO.

and God knows that. move on!

Are you sure you have watched it?
OMG… You call it as her best? Really? best niya na yun? tsk tsk…
Her character should be classic sophisticated liberated woman from New York… but with the way she act? she’s like whore…
maraming inconsistency ang movie.. sayang, pagkakataon niya na sana para magkaroon ng award… Tama lang na hindi siya manominate coz she doesn’t deserve it… I was expecting more from her in this movie coz the trailer was really good.. trailer lang pla ang maganda… sayang ang gastos ng rosario, hindi naideliberate ng tama…
puro panlalait tuloy ang napuna namin sa pelikula habang pinapanuood namin dahil it is really disappointing!!!

  • bin soy

i understand how you people have reacted… you were blinded by the fact that ROSARIO is a drama movie so it should be awarded. well, IT DOESN’T FOLLOW. if you try to watch ANG TANGING INA and compare AI AI’s acting to Jennylyn’s…you would clearly say that Ai Ai’s more deserving. i have nothing against Jennylyn, she did great on SOME scenes but the truth is, she’s INCONSISTENT all thoughout the movie. unlike AiAi who is very natural in her acting from start to finish. maybe that’s what the jurors noticed.

  • cheriz

    @bin soy:
    I super agree…

  • bin soy

@cheriz: i even watched ROSARIO first coz the trailer is so good. however, i got disappointed. had it been another lead stars or should they have brought out Jenny’s best, the movie could have been a lot better! but in fairness to Jennylyn, she’s growing as an actress.

  • cheriz

@bin soy: same here… actually our first choice was dalaw, but we no available seats for us (greenbelt 3) so we chose Rosario, same reason as yours, the trailer was really good…
Pero start pa lang ng movie, disappointed na agad ako… kasi parang generation lang natin yun pag-arte niya.. yes there are parts na okay ang arte niya but inconsistent talga…

  • bin soy

@cheriz: true! there’s something wrong sa movie…it does not seem classic which it should be. i don’t know if it’s the make-up or just the actors themselves.

  • cheriz

    @bin soy:
hahaha.. yeah, we also noticed their make-up… I thought I was watching horror movie especially the make-up of ara mina and isabel oli… OMG!!!
They look like ” galing sa hukay” hehehe

  • bin soy

hahaha…buti pa RPG, it made real proud to be pinoy!

  • bin soy

    *made me

  • cheriz

    yeah, same here…
so far i have watched, enteng and metanoia(with my nephews), rosario and tanging ina( with friends)..
so funny coz my nephews got bored at enteng and four of them decided to go to timezone with my sister…
they did not finish the movie(but i did) considering that enteng was their choice … I dunno why.. :D that’s from the point of view of 6 to 11 years old kids… woah… but they super enjoyed the metanoia especially the larong pinoy, (some of the games is new to them though) and keep on asking me what game is that.. :D
Then with my friends was Rosario.. which we criticized all throughout.. :D
Then the tanging ina.. we keep on laughing… yay!!
Later we will watch DALAW… I hope we can’t see reason to criticized it

  • duh!?

  • sol

    so…..
    what do you expect?

  • Anonymous

There’s no question about the award but it’s just so unfair because there was neither a nomination for albert martinez and Jennylyn mercado…

  • grabe

matataas Lang ang pag-iisip ang nakaka-appreciate ng ROSARIO Like Danny DoLor(aba sikat ito ha!)..pareho niya pinanood ang ROSARIO at Tanging Ina…at ang ganda ng comment niya sa ROSARIO,naiintindihan ba ng mga Jurors ang ibig sabihin ng Major Awards?nakuha ng ROSARIO ang mga Major Awards, how come hindi siLa napasama kahit nomination man Lamang? That’s a BIG,BIG Question

  • Gnoy

Rosario was a horrible movie. Just for its originality, RPG should have won best picture.
