34th Gawad Urian – 2011 Nominees Revealed

The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) released their list of nominees in the running for the 34th Gawad Urian which is happening on May 17, 2011.

The difference of Gawad Urian with other award-giving bodies is that the nominees and winners are chosen by film critics instead of press people.

Just like before, indie films dominate their roster of honorees with some titles we did not even heard. It’s because there not even a single mainstream movie nominated in the Best Picture category. Not even PHL’s entry to the Oscar Awards–“Noy”–which was only distributed, and not produced, by Star Cinema.

Sam Milby‘s fans will surely get excited with the Best Actor nomination received by their idol via his 2nd indie film “Third World Happy.” Milby is up against International Emmy-nominated Sid Lucero for Muli, Indie Prince Coco Martin for Noy and critics’ favorite Fanny Serrano for Tarima.

Both Jodi Sta. Maria and Meryll Soriano made headlines last year with their terrific performance in “Chassis” and “Donor,” respectively. However, they are up against equally-deserving actresses like Rita Avila (Magdamag), Mercedes Cabral (Gayuma), Donna Isadora Gimeno (Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria), Laurice Guillen (Karera), Fe GingGing Hyde (Sheika) and Ces Quesada (Magkakapatid).

problema ng mga nagcocoment dito, ang bobobo. Palibhasa puro kakornihan ang mga pinapanood sa sine. there are 2 types of movies. Commercialized ang Arthouse. Ung mga mainstream movies, most of them are commercialized films. They are not for the masses, but for the intellects, critics, at mas may pinag-aralang tao. matataas ang quality nila since base nman ang quality ng movie sa storyline, plot, script at hindi sa visual effects.

As a matter of fact most films na nanonominate sa oscars are indie films. nanonominate ba transformers, twighlight, harrypotter, tron legacy dun? HINDI?

The Philippine Mainstream movie industry is now very pathetic. Try nio magresearch sa net and you’ll find out na top 20 ng top grossing films sa pilipinas are all foreign movies.

Magaganda pa ung mainstream films noon, the time of Sharon, Vilma, Nora, Lino Broca, Dolphy, etc.

The last great mainstream film ciguro would be Bata bata panu ka ginawa. After that, wala na talaga…..

Anyway, this is just an opinion.

  6. bakit puro indie…where is ang tangin ina, my amnesia girl etc…anu naman yan

  7. starcinema/gmafilms/octoarts/mzet/regal/viva // April 1, 2011 at 1:15 am //

  10. MADLANG PIPOL // March 31, 2011 at 7:33 pm //

  12. Anonymous // March 31, 2011 at 6:26 pm //

aminin natin kz, mainstream is of course for profit, main goal naman ng indie is gumawa ng pelikula na sa tingin ng gumagawa ay may social significance que kumita or hindi, passion nila un ei, kulang cgro s bansang ito is suporta para s lahat ng uri ng pelikula unlike s ibang bansa na they provide funds pa for movie makers, wla p yatang tax na binabayaran or kung meron pa konting konti lang, un amusement tax dito is mataas compare s ibang bansa kea dapat din naman i-recognize ang independent films…

  13. alex g. poser // March 31, 2011 at 5:22 pm //

  14. SA MGA NANG-IINTRIGA EH, MANAHIMIK NA AT AMININ SA INYONG SARILI NA MATAAS TALAGA ANG KALIDAD NG INDIE FILMS NGAYON. PANSININ NYO KAHIT SA MGA FILM FESTIVAL SA IBANGBANSA EH MAS MABENTA ANG INDIES KESA SA MAINSTREAM. ANG INDIES AY TUMATALAKAY SA REALIDAD NG BUHAY AT ITO SIGURO ANG BATAYAN NG URIAN SA PAGPILI KUNG SINO ANG GAGAWARAN NG PARANGAL. FOR ME, DESERVING LANG YAN PERO SANA KINONSIDER ANG TARIMA AT ANG SAYO LAMANG KASI MAGANDA RIN ANG MGA PELIKULANG NABANGGIT.

  16. alex g: How would you equate a Decline in Ads, Cheap Awards, Flop Movie Gross & Poor Artists' Endorsements, from a high ratings (daw!?!?) claimed by gozon? // March 31, 2011 at 12:02 pm //

Cheating & Data Tampering, Desperate Publicity, Mind Conditioning, Mislead Info’s, Rating Manipulations, etc.

Pag d gawang gma, minsan nag re-rate.
    Pag gawang gma, basurang-basura.
    😎

  19. alex g: gma artists/shows are equipped with Very Poor Acting Skills. Kaya dinadaan na lang sa mga effects & fighting pose, para mairaos man lang ang basurang show at pagtakpan ang mga malalamyang pag-arte (how stupid). // March 31, 2011 at 12:01 pm //

Boboserye, Flopserye, Peryaserye, Pornoserye, O.A.serye, T.H.serye, etc.
    Practice Drama – tatak gma.
    😎

  20. alex g: Kapit-Tuko tlga si gozon sa ratings, (as usual pag PANIC time). Walang kadala-dala. // March 31, 2011 at 12:01 pm //

    😎

  21. alex g: AM/FM Programs, Balance Programming, Daytime/Primetime Shows, Foreign Programs, News Channel/Program, Promos, Regional Network Events, Sports, Station ID, TV Format, Timeslot, etc. (kinopya lahat ng gma). // March 31, 2011 at 12:01 pm //

Dahil sa Pera, nawala tuloy prinsipiyo.
    Mga mukhang pera tlga.
    😎

(as compared to BULONG with 67.27M). May "Divine Intervention" pa raw, sabi ni mother lily (how stupid). // March 31, 2011 at 12:00 pm //

“Napakahirap na ng buhay ngayon, kaya for a movie to make over P135 million in 3 days is a miracle. Divine intervention ito”.
    -lily monteverde (how stupid).
    😎

  24. bluejaycarlos // March 31, 2011 at 12:00 pm //

pansin ko lang naging overhyped at overrated ang indie films sa Gawad Urian. i doubt na walang mainstream movie na pasok sa criteria for nomination. tsk tsk.
