One Minute Movie Review: ‘J. Edgar’

J. Edgar is surprisingly enjoyable for a period black and white biopic.

J. EDGAR

Main Cast: Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Director: Clint Eastwood
Genre: Drama
Released By: Warner Bros. Pictures
MTRCB Rating: TBA
Opening Date: January 25, 2012

Gist: J. Edgar explores the public and private life of one of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th century. As the face of law enforcement in America for almost fifty years, J. Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio) was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life.

The Positive: I didn’t expect that I will enjoy watching a period biopic and in black and white at that. The ambiguous sexuality of J. Edgar as portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio has adorable moments and at times humorous.

The Negative: The script lacks intensity. DiCaprio’s boyish look and the contrasting old-age make-up overshadow his brilliant portrayal of the character that could have won him an Oscar nomination.
