TV Cancellation Causes Uproar in Thailand

TV Cancellation Causes Uproar: After a Thai TV network decided to cancel the popular and edgy soap opera "Nua Mek 2," televiewers and critics hold protests that the show's final episodes be shown.

Thailand’s Channel 3 is facing pressure from televiewers and critics after it stopped the airing of the primetime action drama “Nua Mek 2” for grounds that the program has “inappropriate” content for broadcast.

The series started December 14 and was aired three nights a week. It’s about a fictitious Thai prime minister and his corrupt deputy and black magic. The final two episodes scheduled for broadcast last Friday and Saturday were not shown by the network because it’s “detrimental to the monarchy, national stability or public morality” as stated in the bylaws of Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.

On the other hand, protesters said Channel 3 had violated consumers’ rights and the constitution for its decision to abruptly cancel the political drama. Some of them speculates that Thailand’s government had a hand in the cancellation.
