Failon Ngayon Exposes Modus Operandi on ATM Accounts

Broadcast journalist Ted Failion exposes the various modus operandi of ATM scammers and how they rob their unknowing victims this Saturday (Mar 23) in “Failon Ngayon.”

A total of about P15 million to P20 million worth of cash was stolen from ATM accounts of different depositors in the country last year. One of the victims is Jordinette, an ABS-CBN employee who lost more than P100,000 from her ATM account due to the so-called ATM skimming or cloning.

Erika, on the other hand, lost up to P200,000 because of ATM swapping in 2009. In ATM swapping, syndicates would confuse the victim and exchange his or her ATM card with a different one. They will then withdraw all the amount inside the card once they have successfully pulled off the ATM card switch. Meanwhile, it was a different story for Ester who shopped various items amounting to more than P30,000 without her going to the mall or actually making the purchase.

How do these thieves do their modus operandi? Can you still retrieve the money stolen from you ATM accounts? How can you protect yourselves?
