"The Purge" is a hit horror movie directed and written by James DeMonaco. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey.

Here is the synopsis of the movie from Universal:

The film is set in the year 2022, in which the United States has become “a nation reborn”, with crime and unemployment rates hitting an all-time low. To keep these rates low, the government has instated an annual 12-hour time period called “The Purge”, during which people can vent their negative emotions because all crime (including murder) is legal and emergency services are suspended.

“The Purge,” which has a production cost of only $3 million, was a surprise hit in the US earning $16.2 million dollars on opening day and $36.4 million through the entire weekend.

According to reports, a sequel is in the works.
