Failon Ngayon Probes DOTC and LTO Issuance of High-Tech License Plates

Broadcast journalist Ted Failon looks into Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) and Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) issuance of modern license plates containing advanced security features for all types of vehicles this Saturday (August 24) in “Failon Ngayon.”

The said project was launched to tighten the security of motorists and civilians, and to prevent road rage incidents, road accidents, and carjack cases. The new plates contain multiple special features including security images, security lock, and many more.

“It will prevent the tampering, theft, and falsification of license plates, mitigating carnapping, colorum, and smuggling practices,” said DOTC Spokesperson Michael Arthur Sagcal.

However, it has elicited criticisms as many people doubt the success of its implementation. Will the project help in solving road-related crimes? Or will it be a waste of taxpayers’ money when it falls in vain?

Meanwhile, Ted also examines why Sulpicio Lines, now called the Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corporation (PSACC), still continues to operate despite its involvement in numerous mishaps since 1980s, including the recent ship collision in Cebu that killed 70 people.

Republic Act 4653, which states the legalization of importation of used clothes or ukay-ukay, will also be tackled in the episode.
