Filipino-American actor, filmmaker and art curator Nelson Datu Anderson and Jermaine Abrantes of Los Angeles-based ROK (Rain of Kidlat) Films recently released on YouTube a very interesting reedit of the 2008 music video, “Pambansang Kamao” by D-COY & Beatmathics, Artsrong, E.S.P., and Nathan-J. Below is Datu’s story behind it:

“The idea for the video began by way of discussions between myself and Jun Aquino (award-winning Filipino artist who is known for his Pacquiao paintings http://www.junaquinogallery.com/#!the-artist) , in regards to an autobiographical tribute to Manny Pacquiao. Jun showed me all the different rappers, and hip hop artists from the Philippines, and “Pambansang Kamao” by D-COY & BEATMATHICS, Artstrong, E.S.P, Naythan-J, hit a nerve. I realized instantly that this was the anthem, lyrics and beats that would usher the indomitable Manny Pacquiao into the ring, in his epic face-off against Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

“Hooked on the tune, I gathered footage of Manny, from his fledgling bouts to his battles as a champ, and cut it, incorporating the artwork of Jun Aquino as well. What really spurned me to do this tribute to Manny was a statement Mayweather made, that he was the greatest boxer of all time, better than Sugar Ray Robinson – better than Muhammad Ali! I felt a statement as arrogant and as disrespectful as that had to be counter-punched. Being a filmmaker, I could only hit back in the only way I know how, through my art!”
