John Lloyd Cruz’s ‘The Trial’ Airs on Cinema One

The Trial

Cinema One’s “Blockbuster Sundays” is proud to air the cable premiere of “The Trial” this Sunday, August 16 at 8pm.

Headlined by John Lloyd Cruz, “The Trial”plays the role of Ronald Jimenez, Jr., a man with intellectual disability. “Here we see John Lloyd Cruz at one of his finest, his Ronald being the perfect mix of hard and soft, fight and fright. Jessy Mendiola’s Bessy, meanwhile, is convincing and relatable, inspiring both hate and pity,” according to a review by Julia Allende of pep.ph.

Ronald faces the greatest trial of his life when he is accused of raping a school teacher Bessy Buenaventura, portrayed by Jessy Mendiola. Development psychologist Amanda Bien (Gretchen Barretto) asks her criminal lawyer husband Julian Bien (Richard Gomez) to be Ronald’s defense counsel. But fate has its way of intertwining their lives when the couple finds out that Ronald is the best friend of their deceased son Martin Bien (Enrique Gil), who dies in a tragic accident just a year ago. As they and their relationship are put on trial, will love be able to find the lost truth?

“The Trial often falls head first into the pits of melodrama, but it does so with an unabashed desire to do so something new. And while the film does have the tendency to lose itself in the noise of histrionics, it does manage to deliver on a fresh spin to a genre that has long since passed its prime,” says Zig Marasigan of rappler.com.

“The Trial”, directed by master filmmaker Chito Rono also stars Jessy Mendiola, Richard Gomez and Gretchen Barretto.

Catch “The Trial” this Sunday on the country’s number one cable channel, Cinema One on Sunday (August 16) at 8pm, with a replay on Saturday (August 22) at 9pm.
