‘Heneral Luna’ Beats ‘Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo,’ Chosen as PH Entry to 2016 Oscars

The MMFF 2014 entry “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo” has just won Best Picture in the recently concluded FAMAS Awards. However, the still-screening “Heneral Luna” was chosen as the country’s official entry in the Best Foreign Film category of the 88th Academy Awards dubbed as the Oscars. The critically-acclaimed biopic vied for the slot with other note-worthy Filipino films that was shown in theaters from September 2014 to September 2015.

The announcement came from the film’s official Facebook page which goes:

“We are happy to announce and share with everyone the good news: HENERAL LUNA has been selected as the Philippines’ Official Entry to the 2016 Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film Category.”

Directed by Jerrold Tarog, the film follows the career and death of Antonio Luna, one of the country’s national heroes. John Arcilla portrays the titular role and supporting him are Epy Quizon, Joem Bascon, Archie Alemania, Aaron Villaflor, Nonie Buencamino, Ronnie Lazaro, Ketchup Eusebio, Paolo Avelino, Mylene Dizon and Mon Confiado as General Emilio Aguinaldo.

Earlier this year, Lav Diaz’ epic “Norte: Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” became the Philippines’ official entry to the Oscars.
