ABS-CBN Docucentral Looks Into Political Dynasties in ‘Politika at Pamilya’

Studies show that there is a direct correlation between the prevalence of dynasties and poverty.

To prove or disprove this theory, ABS-CBN DocuCentral will take a look at the two extremes in terms of incidence of political dynasties in the Philippines: the Mountain Province, with the lowest number of political dynasties; and Maguindanao, the province with the most number of political dynasties. Both are among the poorest provinces in the country.

Titled “Politika at Pamilya: Sila-sila na noon, sila-sila pa rin ngayon,” the ABS-CBN DocuCentral special election-themed documentary will air on Sunday (May 1) at 10:45 PM on ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel.

The rich culture, history, politics and government system of Mountain Province and Maguindanao may be traced as far back to the time of our forebears. The tribes of Bontoc and the sultanates of Maguindanao have survived and still influences the way their people vote today. Just how deeply-rooted is the cultural heritage in these provinces? And does it contribute to the perpetuation of political dynasties?

Cavite, one of the country’s more dynamic provinces, is also an excellent case study for political dynasty. With its history of warlordism and banditry, along with class wars between peasants and elites, it survived the turbulent past to become a province with an empowered citizenry, an educated leadership and people, and access to technology and information. Interestingly, the old names in Cavite politics have been replaced.

If democracy is about choice, about being afforded the opportunity to choose only the best and brightest to lead the community, does political dynasty, a situation wherein people seem to be deprived of choice weaken democracy? Will there be much opportunity for change if the ballot only show the same names time and again?

What future lies for the Philippines, with political dynasties not wanting to relinquish their hold on power? Will political dynasties prevail in the coming May 9 polls? Tune in to ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, on Sunday (May 1) at 10:45 PM and find the answers in the documentary, “Politika at Pilipino: Sila-sila na noon, Sila-sila pa rin ngayon.” For more information, visit news.abs-cbn.com/anc or follow ANC on Twitter (@ancalerts) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/ANCalerts).
