Former Senator and 2016 Presidential candidate Miriam Defensor-Santiago succumbed to lung cancer on Thursday morning, September 29, 2016. She was 71 years old.

According to her husband Narciso “Jun” Santiago, the former Senator “died this morning in her sleep” at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City. “She was unconscious when she passed away.”

The beloved politician and former judge of the International Criminal Court was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2014.
