Barrio Boy Turned Famous Fashion Designer Gets Spotlight in ‘My Puhunan’

For the past four years, “My Puhunan” has fueled the Filipinos’ entrepreneurial spirit with features on people that have gained success in the field of business. It has also helped some Filipinos reach for their dreams, just like the former barrio boy turned international fashion designer Joemel Calma. Get to know him and his story on “My Puhunan’s” special anniversary episode tomorrow, Tuesday (July 25) after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

In 2014, Karen Davila introduced Joemel to acclaimed fashion designer Avel Bacudio through the show, who then gave him tips to start his career and helped him get opportunities abroad, including a spot a in a famous fashion brand in Oman. Now, Joemel is enjoying success in the country of Oman, where his designs are worn by queens and princesses, and paraded in top fashion shows and fashion magazines.

Joemel is just one of the many Filipinos whose life transformed through the help of “My Puhunan.”

The program recently mounted a Kabuhayan Caravan in Caloocan City to help women who are aspiring to start their own businesses. Various business tips and seminars were introduced by “ka-puhunan” partners Grace Barios of BeauQuest who taught soap-making; and Edwin Lisa and his team who demonstrated their “magical” beauty tricks in fixing eyebrows and haircutting. For those interested in the food business, the Boy Kanin group showed them how easy it is to make tocino, while Remilly Co showed them how she makes her famous Yema Cake.

As the program turns four, it hopes to inspire more Filipinos by showing them that through hard work, faith in God, and trust in themselves, they can earn, make their lives better, and also help other people.
