ABS-CBN journalist Jeff Canoy – known for his fearless coverage of disasters and armed conflicts – has joined the ABS-CBN current affairs program “Red Alert” and will be seen on the program starting Wednesday (September 27) after “Bandila.”

“Red Alert,” which has been at the forefront of promoting emergency-preparedness and safety to Filipinos in the past three years, will also shift to a new docu-reality format, fitting perfectly with Jeff’s expertise on storytelling.

A TV reporter for already a decade, Jeff has been showcasing his versatility as a journalist recently with a powerful piece on the plight of Marawi survivors on ABS-CBN News Online and the “Di Ka Pasisiil” documentary he did with fellow journalist Chiara Zambrano.

Both works garnered positive reviews for Jeff from his peers and netizens, and now he will get to tell even more stories of courage and inspiration of Filipinos on a weekly basis on “Red Alert.”

For his first assignment, Jeff will tackle the dangers brought about by typhoons, more importantly flashfloods. This September, two typhoons have already taken five lives, while seven remain missing due to floods and landslides. Jeff will get to speak with a survivor of Typhoons Maring and Lannie, who will recount his struggle as he tried to put his four kids to safety; however, they were still carried away by the strong current of the flashflood.

Using actual footage, and images and videos gathered from netizens, the program will provide viewers a raw, realistic, and immersive view of what really happened, giving them an idea of what they have to deal with if they were in his situation.

After walking through the experience of the survivor, Jeff will also provide tips from the experts on what can be done to survive in the event of floods and landslides, complete with demonstration and simulation.

Jeff recently expressed excitement on this new development in his career, especially as he gets to do his part in inculcating a culture of safety and preparedness in our country.

“There are many typhoons, earthquakes and other disasters happening in our country nowadays. We’re in a unique position in that we can directly help people learn more about how they can protect themselves. This is an incredible opportunity for me to serve Filipinos,” he said.

With a penchant for long-form storytelling, Jeff added that people can expect a complete viewing experience in “Red Alert,” where they will mix informative content with heartfelt stories that viewers won’t easily forget.

“We’re hoping to bring in more people stories too of rescue, tragedy, heroism and survival into the DNA of the show. People often tell me during my disaster coverage that they never thought tragedy wil happen to them. But the reality is, it can happen to anyone. I’m hoping that through people stories, the audience can relate more to what they can do to prepare. They can see themselves in those situations,” he said.

Apart from the program, “Red Alert” also conducts emergency-preparedness seminars in schools and communities. It also takes part in the “TV Patrol Caravan” that is going to different areas in the country to deliver public service in celebration of the newscast’s 30th anniversary.
