6 Things to Do to Stay Sane When Bedridden

If you’re battling a chronic illness or recovering from an injury, you may be confined to your bed for weeks or months. At first, you may welcome respite and relaxation. But after a few days, you may start itching to do something. That’s why it’s important to stay active as much as you can and avoid excessive daytime sleepiness.
Fortunately, there are many things you can do right from the comfort of your bed.

1. Read

You have plenty of free time now, so use it wisely. Reading is a great place to start. There are plenty of free books and audiobooks available online through your local library and Amazon.

You can also buy eBooks and audiobooks to enjoy while you’re resting.

Get lost in a story, or learn something new.

2. Change Your Linens and Clothes

If you’re not up to the task of taking a bath or shower, changing your bed linens and clothes can make you feel clean and confident.

If you have a low air loss mattress, you may need special sheets and linens. Make sure that you have a few extra sets on hand so that you can change your sheets regularly.

Changing your clothes can also make you feel refreshed and more like a human being. Just make sure that your new clothes are still comfortable and warm.

3. Meditate

Meditation can help alleviate stress and become more aware of the sensations in your body. It may seem counterintuitive to meditate and welcome the uncomfortable sensations you’re feeling, but it’s this welcoming attitude that will help you overcome pain and discomfort.

Start out with just ten minutes of meditation, and work your way up from there if you can. If you’re not sure how to get started, try searching YouTube for free guided meditations. The Headspace app also provides 10-minute guided meditations for free.

4. Stretch in Bed

You may not be able to exercise, but you may be able to stretch in bed. Stretching can help alleviate some tension while helping you maintain flexibility and range of motion. It will also improve circulation, which may also help reduce pain.

There are many different stretch sequences that you can do in bed – a quick search on Google will help you find them.

5. Create

Now that you have plenty of time to yourself, why not tap into your creative self? Write, draw, blog, paint, play music – find a creative outlet. Creating something can provide a sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction.

It doesn’t matter what you’re into. If you can do it from the comfort of your bed, why not spend some time on it? Depending on how long you’ll be bedridden, you may see some very quick progress in your skills.

6. Learn

Thanks to the Internet, you have a world of knowledge right at your fingertips. Why not use your time in bed to learn something new? Take a free online course through Coursera, or research a topic you’re really interested in. Why not learn a new language?

The possibilities for learning are endless, and it can only benefit and enrich your life to learn something new.
