How to Prepare Your Home for the Spring

Graduating from the dark dullness of the wintertime means welcoming a new season of blossoming growth, prosperity, and sunshine. The spring is the season of revitalization and beginning anew, and with so much excitement ahead, preparing your home for the seasonal transition should be at the top of your priority list.

Maintaining a happy and healthy home goes far beyond dusting countertops and vacuuming ceiling corners—it’s a full-fledged project that requires plenty of painstaking care and attention to detail. Instead of overwhelming yourself with an unwritten checklist of things to do, we’ve compiled a list you can use to best prepare your home for the spring.

Using the tips below, you’re just 8 steps away from a sparkling clean home ready to celebrate the springtime!

Step #1: Refresh your color palate

Leave the muted, dark colors of the wintertime in the past by enriching your home décor with bright, lively colors. Whether that means changing your dining table linens, your bathroom towel, or your couch throw cushions, there are plenty of places where you can introduce new hues into your home. Replace the old Christmas decor with pastel Easter gift baskets and swap out the poinsettias for an arrangement of daffodils—revisiting the colors in your home is a great way to transition out of last season and into the new.

Step #2: Wash the windows

Windows often bear the brunt of harsh winter weather, keeping out frigid winds and protecting your home from flying dust, dirt, and even the salt from the snow-laden roads. To give your home a proper springtime facelift,  wash the inside and outside of your windows. You’ll be shocked to see just how much buildup was collected over the course of the season and surprised at how much more light enters the space after a single wash.

Step #3: Clean the gutters

Take your ladder out of retirement for a trip up to your gutters. Odds are pretty good that they’re filled up with all types of debris. With a pair of gloves to protect you from the nasty buildup, remove as much gunk from the gutters as you can. To eliminate any leftover debris, take a hose and run the water through the downspout to wipe the gutters clean.

Step #4: Test smoke alarms

Testing your smoke alarm only takes a minute and could save you during an unexpected emergency. To test your smoke alarm, following these instructions:

  • Press and hold the test button on the smoke detector
  • Wait for a loud, ear-piercing alarm to sound
  • If the sound is quiet or nonexistent, it’s time to replace your batteries

Step #5: Decorate with flowers and greenery

Nothing says springtime quite like fresh flowers and gorgeous green plants. Tackling your spring-cleaning to-do list is made easy when you’re surrounded by beautiful plants that not only add to the feng shui of your home but also detoxify the air—an incredible win-win!

Need some low-maintenance greenery to spruce up your home? Try these pretty potted beauties:

Flowers:

  • Snake plant
  • Pothos
  • Dracaena
  • Rubber tree
  • Bird’s nest fern

Plants:

  • Peace lily
  • Jasmine
  • Laceleaf
  • Rosemallows
  • Geranium

Step #6: De-clutter

Eliminating clutter is a task no one truly ever wants to do, but once everything has a home, you’ll be able to breathe easier and move about your home with heightened flexibility. Rather than aimlessly starting with one nook or cranny, use these tips to get the ball rolling:

  • Start with your closet: Donate the clothing that you never wear or have stylistically grown out of.
  • Create a checklist: Huge projects are a lot easier to handle when you have a working checklist in place.
  • Use boxes to organize: Creating a home for your items most easily begins with designating a space. Boxes serve as great starting points for kickstarting your decluttering project.

Step #7: Furnish with floor mats

If you live in an area where springtime means lots more rainfall, you can bet on increased mud trafficked into your home. To avoid the inevitable mess, fashion your doorways with welcome mats that allow you and your guests to wipe their shoes clean before stepping into your shiny, clean home.

Step #8: Mow the lawn

Capture the scent of the springtime the moment you whip out your trusty lawnmower and trim your yard to an evenly green scene. Not only does this maintain the health of your lawn, but it also enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home!
