Korean Netizens Threaten to Report KATSEYE Over Provocative Choreography and Style of their Comeback Single ‘Gnarly’

Starmo Admin May 15, 2025 3 minutes read

In recent days, the rising girl group KATSEYE has become the subject of intense debate among Korean netizens, with some threatening to escalate their concerns to government authorities. The controversy centers around the group\’s latest comeback, marked by their single \”Gnarly,\” and their performance on the popular Korean music show M Countdown.

Background on KATSEYE

Formed in 2023 through the reality show Dream Academy, KATSEYE is a girl group under the umbrella of Hybe and Geffen Records. Despite being relatively new, the group has quickly garnered attention both for their musical talent and the visual concepts they showcase. Their recent return to the stage with \”Gnarly\” has sparked discussions that go beyond music, touching on issues of youth, appropriateness, and media regulation.

Controversy Over Performances and Visuals

The core of the controversy lies in the group\’s choreography and outfit choices during their comeback stage. Many viewers have expressed discomfort with what they perceive as overly suggestive moves, especially considering that one of the members, Yoonchae, is only 17 years old. Critics argue that the provocative nature of the choreography crosses boundaries of age-appropriate performance, leading to accusations of sexualization.

Adding fuel to the fire, the music video for \”Gnarly\” has also come under scrutiny. Some netizens find the visuals overly sexualized, raising questions about the influence of such content on impressionable audiences.

Public Response and Calls for Regulation

The heated reactions have prompted some to threaten formal complaints to various authorities, including the Korea Media Rating Board, the Broadcasting Review Committee, and the Youth Harmful Media Reporting Center under the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. These organizations are responsible for monitoring and regulating content deemed inappropriate for certain age groups, and the protesters are calling for stricter oversight of the group\’s activities.

Mixed Opinions

Despite the controversy, opinions among fans and critics are divided. While some share the concerns about appropriateness, others defend the group\’s artistic expression and performance skills. Personally, some listeners, including the author of the initial commentary, have expressed appreciation for \”Gnarly\” after giving it multiple listens, noting that the song\’s appeal becomes clearer over time. Likewise, they believe the group members handled their stage presence well, emphasizing that artistic choices can be subjective.

What do you think?

Are the concerns about KATSEYE’s choreography and visuals justified, or is this a case of overreach? Share your thoughts below.
