MEGA Young Designers Competition (YDC) was created by Sari Yap, founder of the MEGA Publishing Group and EIC of MEGA magazine, to highlight the immense talents of aspiring Filipino designers. She envisioned a gathering of creative minds that can bring Philippine fashion to the runways of the world.

The competition opened doors for countless designers to find their niche and establish their names in the industry. As the new season of YDC officially begins on November 26, 2011, MEGA looks back and highlights past designers who have been part of the competition.

Russel Villafuerte, winner of the 9th edition of YDC, shared, “It’s such a great privilege to be part of that elite group of top designers in the country who joined YDC.” Something for viewers to look forward to, Russel revealed his experience. “You get to see a lot of things in the challenges like making gowns and couture in just 8 hours!”

For the first female designer winner of YDC, Vanessa Ang was happy to mention that YDC opened a lot of doors in her career. “I got to meet a lot of people and got invited to all these fashion events that introduced me to different people and provided me with more knowledge on the industry.”

Dubai based Furne One – who was part of the first YDC competition – has already made an international mark with his designs. International celebrities Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj are some of the artists who have already worn his outfits in various occasions.

Other notable fashion figures who joined the competition are some of the Philippine’s most revered designers like Rajo Laurel, Raoul Ramirez, Mich Dulce, Ivarluski Aseron, Chris Diaz, OJ Hofer, Patrice Ramos-Diaz and the internationally acclaimed Veejay Floresca to name a few.

The question is, “Who is the next?”

It is through fashion that designers tell their story of inspirations and creations. For 12 years now, Rissa Mananquil has been the apple the eye of his son Enzo. Now, another man will vow to be with her for a lifetime, as she’s about to take her life’s newest catwalk—not as a model but a bride.

“Metro Weddings,” the country’s premier bridal magazine, threw a special wine pairings themed bridal shower at the Marriott Hotel’s Garden Room elegantly styled by one of the country’s creative events stylists, Henry Pascual for Mananquil’s upcoming love union with her lawyer, businessman and sports executive fiancé Paolo Trillo.

Dubbed as a “Celebration of Love for Rissa,” the event fit for the lady that she is, gathered the bride-to-be’s friends, family and entourage, which also served as a reunion of family and friends.

The celebration was filled with loud cheers, clinking of the glasses, meaningful chats and unending gratitude expressed by Rissa as she posed for snapshots in the afternoon which overflowed with love for her.

Recognizing the many hats she wears in varied fields she dabbles in, Rissa shares “I may take on many roles—model, columnist, teacher—but before and above anything else, I am a mother. And no other role or job can be as rewarding as that,” she said.

Being a mother is a very demanding task but it was made easy by the support given by her soon-to-be husband and the priceless support from her mom, Millet. “No woman should ever feel alone or scared about the challenges she faces in motherhood. I’ve enjoyed countless conversations with other moms on tips and tricks, anecdotes and advice, but the best conversations will always be with my best friend— my own mom,” Rissa said.

She also finds herself lucky and blessed because Paolo and her 12-year-old son Enzo has an incredible relationship, “I think Enzo loves Paolo more than me! Paolo has loved and cared for Enzo just like his own.”

Rissa will soon be walking in a new path, now with Paolo holding her hand, together they will soar high and make their dreams come true.
