“Lola,” the latest film by Cannes-winning director Brillante “Dante” Mendoza, won the Grand Knight Award, equivalent to the Grand Jury Prize in the world competition category of the 27th Miami International Film Festival in the US.

The international film festival also commended the star of Lola, Anita Linda, as a cinema icon and its story for offering “an earnest, compassionate study of forgiveness and redemption.”

The pinoy indie film bested 13 other entries from Russia, Brazil, China, Bolivia and The Netherlands in the category that celebrates the works of up-and-coming filmmakers from around the world.

Brillante Mendoza took home a cash prize of $25,000 cash from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Written by Lynda Casimiro, Lola is about two elderly women [who] bear the consequences of a crime involving their respective grandsons–one is the victim, the other is the suspect.

Starring Anita Linda and Rustica Carpio, Lola also won Second Best Picture at the Venice Filmfest last year and Best Film (with a cash prize of $50,000) in Dubai.

Here is the kapuso network’s press release regarding the tv ratings report of AGB Nielsen Philippines for the month of February 2010:

GMA 7 continues to lead in Mega Manila TV ratings all weekdays of February, based on figures from AGB Nielsen Philippines.

In February, GMA posted an average weekday audience share of 39.1 percent, up by 1.4 percent points versus ABS-CBN’s 37.7. Partial data (available until March 14; with March 7 to 14 based on overnight ratings) showed GMA ahead overall with an average audience share of 36.2 percent, up by 0.4 percentage point against ABS’ 35.8.

The continued success of GMA in viewer-rich Mega Manila is attributed to the steady performance of its primetime programs in TV ratings. Based on AGB Nielsen’s 2010 TV household population projections, Mega Manila TV households now comprise 55 percent of the National Urban Philippines TV population and are generated from a bigger panel of 800 TV households.

Viewers can expect an even better line-up of GMA shows on primetime and other day parts in the coming months, as the Kapuso station is set to launch new, exciting and high quality programs within the quarter.

Including specials, GMA programs figured strongly in the overall Top 30 list for the period March 1 to 14, with 14 shows making it in the said roster.

Manny Pacquiao’s latest fight against Joshua Clottey topped all programs, while the network’s two primetime fantasy series, Panday Kids and The Last Prince, led by Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal, were also in the Top 5.

GMA’s banner newscast 24 Oras got the highest rank among all news programs as it landed sixth on the list of Top 30 overall programs. 24 Oras had an average rating of 27.4 points, ahead of rival TV Patrol World’s 25 points.

New primetime series Diva, which has been receiving positive comments from viewers and print media, also landed a spot in the Top 10 list.

Broadcast journalist Anthony Taberna brings out the lighter side of vice-presidential candidates as he interviews each of them up close and personal in “Umagang Kay Ganda” beginning Monday (Mar 22) on ABS-CBN.

Unlike the usual debates and interviews, Anthony will ask the candidates plain and simple getting-to-know-you questions in his segment “Punto por Punto” that will allow viewers to see pass the political image they project.

“Umagang Kay Ganda” will soon wrap up its series of interviews with the presidential candidates, which started last January. The presidentiables did not escape Anthony’s direct, no-nonsense, and straightforward questions not only on issues, but also about their personalities.

Anthony got the crowd cheering when he asked Sen. Richard Gordon if he ever had injected botox on his face. “I never had botox. I am what I am and what you see is what you get,” said Gordon.

He took note of Sen. Manny Villar’s well-combed hair and asked why it so well-managed all the time. “I always have a comb with me and of course one of my staff is checking on it every once in a while. It’s really quite embarrassing to be in front of the public with your hair very messy,” said Villar.

Bro. Eddie Villanueva was asked if he ever had two girlfriends at the same time. He replied, “I am an activist and sa aktibismo, bawal ang babaismo.”

The series of interviews in “Umagang Kay Ganda” is part of ABS-CBN’s election advocacy campaign “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” that aims to encourage Filipinos to take an active role in society and vote wisely this coming May elections.

Since its launch in 2007, ABS-CBN already mounted numerous election-related debates and fora, a music video calling for action and change, and just recently, a sold-out concert attended by its army of boto patrollers which already reached more than 60,000 nationwide.

Department of Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral has admitted that the government has 200 million pesos (US$ 4.35 million) to advertise its condom campaign alone.

Secretary Cabral faces the controversial issues hurled at her this Saturday on “The Bottomline with Boy Abunda” with Boy Abunda.

Dubbed as immoral and ‘has one foot in hell’, several bishops have already called for Secretary Cabral’s resignation because of her indestructible support for condom distribution in the country.

She was not only being criticized by the church sector. A fellow doctor and former DOH official called her ignorant of the real situation and even accused her of having personal interest in the campaign.

Witness how Secretary Esperanza Cabral faces all the controversies as she shares her unyielding stance about the distribution of condoms in the Philippines on “The Bottomline with Boy Abunda” on ABS-CBN, after Banana Split’s primetime telecast.

24-year-old JC de Vera signed a non-exclusive contract with TV5 to become one of the rising network’s roster of talents. JC’s contract with GMA has expired last March 14. His manager, Annabelle Rama, who had a feud with GMA executive Wilma Galvante, took the opportunity to pull him out from the primetime series “Panday Kids” and transfer him to TV5.

TV5 formally presented JC de Vera as one of their new talents to the media last March 17 at Mario’s restaurant on Tomas Morato, Quezon City.

JC said becoming a ka-shake is such “a relief” since he’s in the middle of the feud between his manager Annabelle Rama and kapuso boss Wima Galvante. However, He is grateful to GMA 7 for molding his showbiz career in 6 years.
