The current Box Office King bested other contenders like Sam Milby, Gerald Anderson, Ryan Agoncillo, Derek Ramsay and Jake Cuenca. Piolo Pascual, Diether Ocampo and Jericho Rosales were not included in the poll because they are considered drama “veterans.”

When Bea Alonzo won the “Drama Princess” poll a couple of months ago, it was also the time when the kapamilya network awarded to her the prestigious role of the pinay “Betty La Fea.” Bea bested Angel Locsin, Roxanne Guinoo, Anne Curtis and Kim Chiu in the said poll.

Last weekend, it was finally announced that the role of “Armando” in I Love Betty La Fea is going to be played by John Lloyd Cruz, ABS-CBN’s newest drama prince.

Both Bea and John Lloyd starred as a love team in the drama series “Maging Sino Ka Man” and in movies “Close to You”, “Now That I Have You” and last year’s box-office hit “One More Chance.”

The chosen actor to play Armando in Betty La Fea was supposed to be announced on ASAP’08 but at the last minute it was cancelled.

In an interview by TV Patrol World, Ruffa Gutierrez named 3 actors that she’s excited to work with – Piolo Pascual, Gabby Concepcion and John Lloyd Cruz. So does it mean that Jake Cuenca is out of the list of actors who are being considered to play “Armando”?

The Philippine cast, which will adapt characters from both the Columbian and US versions of the series, will include a lot of local veteran actors as well as some exciting new faces. Expect a lot of surprises as Betty La Fea promises to be as addicting as its foreign counterparts.
Betty (played by Bea Alonzo) is a smart yet unattractive girl, fresh out of college, who wants to prove her worth in the working world. After a lot of unsuccessful job applications, she lands a job at the Eco Moda fashion office, where she encounters a lot of interesting and difficult characters who aren’t used to seeing anything unfashionable walking in their corridors.

Since most of the scenes will be shot in an office setting, ABS-CBN decided to construct a full-scale office set just for the series. The Eco Moda office set is already under construction at one of the floors of the Eugenio Lopez Building in the ABS-CBN compound. This is just one of the exciting developments expected to unfold as the series gets underway. Story-wise, expect to see a lot of Filipino touches although a lot of the original elements are being retained.

Although there is much speculation as to who will finally play Armando, Betty’s love interest, the producers still refuse to reveal who will be Bea’s new leading man. Will Bea finally be sharing kilig scenes with hot hunk Jon Avila or will she test her on-screen chemistry with Luis Manzano? Or will diehard fans get their wish granted to see their favorite love team reunited once again?

The original Betty La Fea was shown in various countries from 1999 to 2001. It was first aired in the Philippines via GMA 7. Some countries like Mexico, Spain, Israel, India, Germany, Turkey, Russia, Netherlands, Greece, Croatia, Czech Republic and Portugal also bought the franchise of the Colombian telenovela to have their own version.

The most popular adaptation of the telenovela is the US version “Ugly Betty” which won various awards for Best Comedy series including the Emmys. The star of Ugly Betty, America Ferrera, also won various Best Actress awards for playing the role. T

Pokwang said it’s nearly impossible for her to play Betty La Fea if ever offered for the role because the crew will have a major difficulty in making her ugly.

Although no one’s being selected yet, Valerie Concepcion said she’s honored and flattered for being considered for the role.

Other actresses being considered for the role are “Lobo” star Angel Locsin and “Maging Sino Ka Man” mainstays Bea Alonzo and Anne Curtis. Even Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez was also considered for the series which almost compeled the kapuso diva to transfer to ABS-CBN.

Regine mentioned on The Buzz last Sunday that she requested GMA-7 to buy the franchise of “Betty La Fea” last year only to find out that the rights was already bought by ABS-CBN. When she guested on Sharon weeks ago, an ABS-CBN official told her they would give her the role of “Betty La Fea” if she is willing to transfer “over the bakod”. But negotiations didn’t push through as ABS-CBN later denied the alleged P25 million “offer”.
