Thirty one digital films in competition, plus more than a hundred in exhibition, new sections, and a second festival venue all make Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival bigger and better this year. With the tagline in festival ads beckoning audiences to “See the Unseen”, Cinemalaya films this year tackle such themes as passion, memory, truth, despair, obsession, terror and splendor.

For the first time in Cinemalaya, Focus Asia which will feature films by various Asian directors from Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Singapore, and Japan as brought about by a clamor for more Asian indie films to be shown in the country, which was noted by festival director Nestor Jardin.

The Ronwaldo Reyes Retrospective, presented in cooperation with the Society of Filipino Archivists for Film, is another new section of the festival that will feature old works by some of the most celebrated filmmakers in the country. This year, it will showcase some of the directorial works of the late King of Philippine Movies and National Artist Fernando Poe Jr. – whose pseudonym as a director was Ronwaldo Reyes.

The Cinemalaya Documentary section presented in cooperation with Calata Corp. will feature a number of documentaries showing the true face of Philippine society.

The NETPAC Philippine Premieres, which is another competition category, features eight films vying against each other.

The Ani Section will showcase some of the best Filipino indie films of the past year.

Kids Treats, as the name suggests, will feature indie films for children, while the films in the Midnight Specials section tackle more adult themes.

Apart from these new sections, Cinemalaya will also organize the Cinemalaya Film Congress with the theme “Building Bridges Across Asia Through Films,” which will hopefully strengthen the independent filmmaking scene, not just in the Philippines but the entire region.

The Sine Taktakan forums will also be held within the festival with lectures and exhibits by the 2011 Cinemalaya filmmakers.

The three main categories of the Cinemalaya feature a total of 31 films, namely:

AmBisyon2010, the epic project that gathered 20 of the Philippines’ top independent filmmakers led by Brillante Mendoza, Erik Matti, Jeffrey Jeturian, and Raymond Red, makes its return to the silver screen via the Cinemalaya 2010 as one of the featured films for the ANI: Harvest of the Year’s Best section.

Made up of 20 short films on the ten pressing issues in the country, amBisyon2010 will have a special screening in the festival this Saturday (July 17), 9pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).

AmBisyon2010 was conceptualized by indie directors Paolo Villaluna and Emman Dela Cruz with the goal of helping Filipinos prepare for the 2010 elections by presenting to them the nation’s issues in education, poverty, democracy, justice and human rights, health, security, environment, population, economy, and corruption through the eyes of 20 filmmakers.

The project got embroiled in a controversy early this year after Mendoza’s “Ayos Ka” and Jeturian’s “Ganito Tayo Ngayon, Paano Na Tayo Bukas” initially received X-ratings from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, the creator and producer of amBisyon2010, appealed to the MTRCB and eventually got to screen all 20 films at the CCP, the UP Film Institute, and on ANC SkyCable channel 27.

Set in 1989, the film captures the ritual motions of the women in a family preparing for the wedding of 16-year-old Ayesah who has been betrothed to a man she barely knows. As Maguindanaon tradition dictates, she will be kept from public view in her private quarters –limbunan— where she will be prepared, readied, and pampered for her wedding.

As preparations for her union is underway, Ayesah is reunited with her childhood tutor Maguid who returns to the village as a militiaman after an absence of five years, reawakening Ayesah’s past memory of childhood infatuation.

Throughout Ayesah’s confinement her precocious and rebellious eight-year-old sister Saripa becomes her eyes to the world beyond her room. Her mother Amina keeps her composure despite the fact her husband sleeps with his second wife half of the time, finding solace in the belief that it is both her religious and familial duty to be an obedient wife.

Ayesah’s aunt Farida is tasked to ensure that she is prepared for the wedding. However, Farida’s dark past challenges Ayesah’s resolve finding herself choosing between love and loyalty to tradition and family.

“Limbunan” stars Tetchie Agbayani, Jea Lyka Cinco, Mayka B. Lintongan, Jamie Unte and Joem Bascon. Helmed by Gutierrez Mangansakan II, the film opens this July 9 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Pink Halo-Halo is an entry in the Director’s Showcase category of the 6th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.

Pink Halo–Halo shows how war in Mindanao affects a child’s innocence. It is a film by Joselito Altarejos, director of “Ang Lalaki sa Parola”, and starring Allen Dizon, Angeli Bayani, Dexter Doria, Mark Fabillar and Paolo Constantino.

Pink Halo–Halo is the first Philippine movie shot entirely in Masbateño language.

Synopsis:

Natoy, like any other child, finds joy and excitement in the simplest of things, especially eating halo-halo filled with pink gelatin and red sago. Things change suddenly when, as he is watching television, a news report about the ongoing war in Mindanao shows footage of a badly wounded soldier waiting for rescue . That soldier almost bleeding to death is his father, Corporal Lino Bolante.

That report starts his journey as he and his mother Sonia wait for help that comes too late. As far away as the war, this story does not just show how the war in Mindanao robs a child of his innocence, but also shows the shadows of the wars that Filipino homes confront everyday.
