‘Krusada’ Probes Alleged Misuse of Malampaya Funds

Broadcast journalist Henry Omaga-Diaz will look into the alleged misuse of revenue generated from the Malampaya natural gas project in Palawan tomorrow (Oct 25) in “Krusada.”
In an exclusive interview, Bishop Pedro Arigo of Puerto Princesa will expose the said irregularities from the bidding until the implementation of the project, which extracts natural gas from the waters of Palawan. It has earned $8.9 billion since 2002, according to Congress.
The Commission on Audit (COA) previously released a report that revealed the Malampaya funds has financed projects of government agencies that have nothing to do with energy development. Only a small fraction of the funds was also said to have used for electrification of communities in the country.
Aside from that, the Malampaya project has also funded ghost projects and the overpricing of road and bridge repair in the provincial government and congressional districts of Palawan.

‘Krusada’ Investigates Detrimental Effects of Malnutrition on Learning
October 16, 2012 by ABS-CBN · Comments Off
Malnutrition remains to be one of the major causal factors associated with poor academic performance of school children in the country. According to the Department of Education, about two million students in the country are underweight.
This Thursday (Oct 18) in “Krusada,” broadcast journalist Karen Davila will examine the importance of proper nutrition for school children. Karen said a lot of nutritious foods are affordable and are available in the market; parents only have to learn how to prepare them in a way that would appeal to kids.
“Food is not only for the body but also for the mind. Filipino children should have access to proper nutrition if we want a brighter and more active youth,” she said.
Karen will introduce viewers to 14-year old and first year high school student Arnel Tamayo who, since Grade 1, has gone to school everyday without having breakfast. Undernourishment severely affects the academic performance of Arnel, who said he often feels sleepy and unenthusiastic in class.
Like Arnel, fellow first year students Lenyvie, Jaymar, and Rommel are also underweight and weigh only between 18 and 25 kilos, which is notably lower compared to their classmates.

‘Krusada’ Probes the P111-B Bridge Scam
October 10, 2012 by ABS-CBN · Comments Off
Broadcast journalist Henry Omaga-Diaz will investigate the allegedly overpriced billion-peso bridge program during the term of former President Gloria Arroyo this Thursday (Oct 11) in “Krusada.”
Senator Serge Osmeña III has claimed that the Arroyo administration spent P111 billion on overpriced bridges that are of no use to small populations in far-flung areas in the country.
Henry will roam around Tarlac, Pangasinan, Agusan del Sur, Misamis Oriental, and Ilocos Norte to look for allegedly unused bridges that either don’t connect roads or are not used by vehicles.
Will the administration of President Noynoy Aquino punish former government officials involved with the project in line with its “tuwid na daan” battle cry? What about remote communities in the country that badly need bridges for trade, transportation, and economic development?

‘Krusada’ Tracks Down Politicians Who Engage in Premature Campaigning
October 2, 2012 by cd · Comments Off
Broadcast journalist Abner Mercado will track down ‘epal’ or self-promoting politicians who engage in premature campaigning this Thursday (Oct 4) in “Krusada.”
Abner, together with the anti-epal movement led by activist Mae Paner also known as Juana Change, will take a tour around areas in Metro Manila that are lined with posters, billboards, and infrastructures bearing the names and photos of politicians.
Abner will also check on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter to examine netizens’ opinion on electioneering and the anti-epal campaign.
The mandated campaign period for the coming elections is set to start in February next year, but according to anti-epal groups, many government officials have already plastered their names and faces on posters announcing and bragging projects funded by taxpayer money.
Will politicians own up to being called ‘epal’?

Joel Lamangan Reveals Martial Law Experience in ‘Krusada’
September 26, 2012 by ABS-CBN · Comments Off
Before he became an award-winning filmmaker, Joel Lamangan spent his youth fighting for human rights during the Martial Law period and was detained and tortured for it.
This Thursday (Sept 27) in “Krusada,” Joel will share his experiences as a member of militant group Kabataang Makabayan in Henry Omaga-Diaz’s special report for the 40th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.
The acclaimed director even used his art and experience in making advocacy films such as “Dukot,” which tackles ‘desaparecidos’ or victims of enforced disappearances and the worsening situation of human rights violation in the country.
But long after the repressive Martial Law period, enforced appearances still persist in the Philippines. Henry will tell the story of James Balao, an NGO worker of Cordillera Peoples Alliance, a group that advocates the rights of indigenous people. Since James went missing in 2008, his family has engaged in a tireless search for him and the people who abducted him. Will James’ family get the justice they deserve?

‘Krusada’ Pays Tribute to Outstanding Educators in the Country for National Teachers’ Month
September 18, 2012 by ABS-CBN · Comments Off
Broadcast journalist Karen Davila will pay tribute to Filipino teachers who exhibit extraordinary dedication to their profession and have made a difference in their own communities in a special episode for National Teachers’ Month this Thursday (Sept 20) in “Krusada.”
“With inadequate employment benefits and classroom facilities, our teachers stay devoted to advancing the quality of education in the Philippines,” Karen said.
Karen will feature the inspiring stories of outstanding educators who were awarded and deemed as role models by the Metrobank Foundation.
Rizal Vidalo of Cavite, who has been teaching for eleven years, invented a teaching module that enhanced the science performance of the students in his school as shown by the National Achievement Test results. Galcoso Alburo of Marikina, meanwhile, crafted the licensure exam for teachers with major in Filipino and was honored hero during the typhoon Ondoy.
How do teachers remain motivated to teach despite their lack of hospitalization and retirement benefits? Will the Department of Education finally address teachers’ needs given that its allocation in the 2013 national budget has been increased?
