American Idol finalist Michael Johns is coming to Manila to perform live at the Ayala Malls.

Best known for standing among the top 12 finalists on season 7 of hit TV show American Idol (won by David Cook), musical marvel Michael Johns started out as a keen sportsman who played tennis and the Australian Rules Football. Upon moving to the US from Australia in 1988, he began singing in local bars in Atlanta, Georgia. As a fan of the reality music show American Idol, Johns decided to audition at age 28, the last eligible age to join. Effort and hard work paid off as he got a unanimous vote from all three judges with his rendition of Otis Redding’s I’ve Been Loving You Too Long by Otis Redding, and earned a trip to Hollywood. His high-powered version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody in the Hollywood eliminations assured him a place in the Top 12.

“Pretty surprising bottom 3″, this was Randy Jackson‘s comment on American Idol results show as Michael Johns, Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson were the names left in Ryan’s roll call while the first five contestants were declared safe (including Kristy Lee Cook). In one of the most shocking eliminations in the history of the show, “Celebrate Me Home” played unexpectedly to Aussie hunk Michael Johns.

Doing the Beatles night for the second week in a row wasn’t good for most of the Top 11 contestants on American Idol. The judges were critical on song choice that only Syesha Mercado was praised for picking the best one while the rest suffered from picking the B-sides.

The guys came back yesterday from a dismal output last week with David Archuleta ruling the show and Chikezie redeeming himself. But the girls who received rave reviews last week were just so so tonight. There were no clear stand outs as most of them delivered what we call a “safe” performance.
