From 65 entries from around the world, the 9 semi-finalists for the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film were announced.

The 9 foreign language movies are as follows:

The Baader Meinhof Complex (Germany)
The Class (France)
Departures (Japan)
Everlasting Moments (Sweden)
The Necessities of Life (Canada)
Revanche (Austria)
Tear This Heart Out (Mexico)
3 Monkeys (Turkey)
Waltz With Bashir (Israel)

Only 1 entry from Asia made it to the semi-finals this year, the film about death entitled “Departures” which is an entry from Japan.

In the recently concluded Golden Globe Awards, the 5 finalists were:

Waltz with Bashir (Israel)
The Baader Meinhof Complex (Germany)
Everlasting Moments (Sweden)
Gomorrah (Italy)
I’ve Loved You So Long (France)

Israel’s entry “Waltz with Bashir” won the Golden Globe this year. Can it duplicate the victory in the coming Oscars?

The Philippine entry “Ploning” starring Judy Ann Santos failed to make the cut.

The Board of Governors of the Film Academy of the Philippines have selected the indie film “Ploning” starring Judy Ann Santos as the country’s entry to the 2009 Oscars instead of Sharon Cuneta’s “Caregiver.”

Five members of a special committee tasked to select the country’s entry which is headed by National Artist for Film Eddie Romero as chairman narrowed down the possible nominee to two films, Ploning and Caregiver. In a meeting last August 20, three members voted for Ploning and two members chose Caregiver.

Indie films Tribu, Pisay, Endo and Serbis were included in the six-film short list.

Both Ploning and Caregiver received the highest grade of “A” from the Cinema Evaluation Board earlier this year.

The Star Cinema and Viva Films’ romantic drama When Love Begins has already grossed P 69,277,632.90 on its two weeks of running. The Aga Muhlach-Anne Curtis starrer was second only to Hollywood superhero movie Iron Man, which already raked in P 120,930,291.90 for 2 weeks.

Compared with Aga’s previous movie “A Love Story” with Maricel Soriano and Angelica Panganiban, When Love Begins is lackluster at the boxoffice. A Love Story has grossed P 130,169,177.10 and it ran for 8 weeks. A Love Story was no. 1 in 3 weeks beating the Hollywood movie “Bourne Ultimatum” starring Matt Damon which also premiered last August 15, 2007.

Although When Love Begins can still run to 4 to 6 weeks of screening, it could only pull in approximately P10 million or less specially that Hollywood summer movies are now hitting the theaters. For what its worth, When Love Begins received a grade of “B” from the Cinema Evaluation Board which means the producers will only pay 50% for its amusement tax.

The independent movie “Ploning”, produced by various filmmakers collectively known as “Panoramanila”, has grossed P 10,546,847.40 in 2 weeks. This is an above the average performance for an indie-movie in the country. Furthermore, the Judy Ann Santos starrer was shown only in SM cinemas nationwide. Plus, it’s the first movie this year to receive a grade of “A” from the Cinema Evaluation Board.

Judy Ann’s previous movies like Ouija and Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo has grossed P87.3 M and P122.9 M respectively. Of course, we have to consider that SSS has no Hollywood movie competitor compared to Ouija so these two movies are both hits. And while her last 2 films are commercial successes, her latest film “Ploning” was a critical success.

Let’s take a look at this year’s box-office so far, shall we?

There are speculations that one of ABS-CBN superstars, Judy Ann Santos, is inclined with the idea of returning to GMA 7 – the network where she started her career.

Apparently, Judy Ann has “tampo” with ABS-CBN as Star Cinema set the airing of their latest movie “When Love Begins” starring Aga Muhlach and Anne Curtis on April 30, the same date that her independent movie “Ploning” was scheduled to premiere. Judy Ann is one of the producers of said film and they are the first one to book the said date for the screening of “Ploning.”

“There’s no Filipino movie premiering on the whole month of April except for the 30th so why pick that day when there is one?”, the question the producers of Ploning are asking.

In an interview with Pinoy Entertainment Portal, Judy Ann expressed her disappointment:

Judy Ann is very thankful with GMA 7 for the network’s support in promoting her movie “Ploning”. She’s hoping that ABS-CBN, on the other hand, will allow her to promote her movie despite conflict of interest since Star Cinema’s “When Love Begins” is airing on the same date with “Ploning.”

Last Sunday, Judy Ann is the special guest in the “Don’t Lie To Me” segment of the GMA showbiz-oriented talk show Showbiz Central. She was able to promote her movie on the said show.

Judy Ann had a problem before in promoting her movie with GMA Films, “Ouija”, on ABS-CBN shows. Her manager Alfie Lorenzo even accused ABS-CBN of sabotaging the premiere of Ouija in the US.

And when asked if she will renew her contract with ABS-CBN, she replied:

“Pag-iisipan ko muna siguro nang matagal,” sagot niya. “Parang feeling ko kasi, loyalty is not enough evidence for them to support you, e. Alam n’yo yun? Pero siyempre, in fairness naman, ang dami rin naman talagang itinulong sa akin ng mother studio ko. Ang dami rin naman nilang ibinigay na pagsusuporta sa akin. I really appreciate those things.

“Pero alam n’yo, meron talagang time na dumarating na they will test your loyalty. They will test your patience and everything na puwedeng i-test sa ‘yo.

Apparently, Judy Ann has still 1 year before her contract with ABS-CBN expires. Her next project with the kapamilya network is the teleserye “Habang May Buhay” opposite Derek Ramsey.

Ploning is the first movie produced by Panoramanila, a new film outfit composed of young Filipino filmmakers coming from both independent and commercial cinema industries.

(Teaser trailer after the jump)

Panoramanila fuses independent cinema spirit with commercial filmmaking sensibilities. Their first feature film, Ploning, is shot with live sound and in the traditional 35 mm. film format, so basically, this is not a digital movie.

The Judy Ann starrer was shot entirely in Cuyo Island, Palawan, showcasing its breath-taking sceneries.

The main inspiration of the film is from the popular Cuyonon folk song, “Ploning”. It presents the story of a Cuyonon woman’s promise, her struggle with hope and love told from the point of view of a young boy.
