Before Champ Lui-Pio left the band Hale, Rico Blanco was first to be known as the lead vocalist of a premiere band who went solo.  
 
On June 12, 2008, Warner Music Philippines launched Rico Blanco as a solo artist via the album “Your Universe” which won for the former Rivermaya front man four Awit Awards, three Philippine Radio Music Awards and Favorite New Artist in MYX Music Awards. 
 
The carrier single of the said album was “Yugto” but it’s the track “Neon Lights” that made Rico Blanco the first Filipino artist to debut at no. 1 in Hong Kong radio charts beating songs from international artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Beyonce.
 
“Neon Lights” is an upbeat song about living your life. It has a funky rock feel to it with a hint of new wave and post punk kinda like the music of Depeche Mode and The Cure.
 
If you listen to the song without knowing that it’s Rico Blanco who had written and sung it, the first thing that will come to mind is that it’s foreign and sounds like it’s from a UK band.
 
Well, “Neon Lights” is the song that Blanco will be using with his Coca-Cola mash-up with Amber Davis.

And as for Amber Davis, if the name doesn’t ring a bell, She is a Filipino-American singer who started out as a background vocalist to American singers Hilary Duff and Kashiff. Her claim to fame in the Philippines was with the release of her single “Manila” in 2006 from her debut album with Viva Records titled “Feel Good Music.”

 
“Manila” did not only dominate both radio and music video charts that time but it also won numerous awards for Amber like an Awit Award for Best Performance By A New Female Recording Artist and RX 93.1′s Artist of the Year and Song of the Year in 2007.
 
“Manila”, as the title suggests, is about her favorite city in the world. In the song, Amber reminisces her memories of Manila when she was still young and expresses her desire to return to the Philippine capital.

Now let’s talk about the new Coca-Cola mash-up and how the songs “Neon Lights” by Rico Blanco and “Manila” by Amber Davis have been smooshed together.
 
In an interview by Bianca Roque on MYX, Rico Blanco admitted that the mash-up project with Amber was a challenge because their songs have different key and tempo.
 
Nevertheless, Rico brought his band to help him with the arrangement.

After listening to “Manila” and “Neon Lights”, I understood why Rico Blanco said the mash-up came to him as a challenge. Compared with previous mash-ups, I think “Neon Lights” and “Manila” have the least compatibility. And this is the challenge for the two artists.

In a press release posted in Warner Music Philippines’s blog, they announced that they will put up a “Sesame Street” corner with TV and DVD set, and books in a public school for the whole month of March to encourage laughter and learning at an early age. Walkaround Elmo and Cookie Monster will be on hand to join in the education celebration.

As ambassador of the Sesame Street project, Blanco will be the face and voice of the campaign in generating support from the media and sponsors and encourage all his friends and fans of his music to participate. The partners will kickstart the campaign in one school and hope to secure sponsorship to create additional Sesame Street corners in public schools throughout the Philippines.

“Rico, a wonderfully talented artist, truly connects with his fans through the power of media,” said Maura Regan, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Global Consumer Products, Sesame Workshop. “His appeal and influence are undeniable and we are thrilled to be working with him to encourage a love of learning with young children in the Philippines.”

Rico was thrilled at the opportunity to be part of the campaign. “I feel blessed to be given this chance to help.” The self-confessed Sesame Street Kid shares, “We’d watch the program everyday and would never miss an episode. We loved the characters, the skits, the art, the music! We would always sing (and sometimes dance!) along to the songs. In fact, along with the Beatles, I’ve always credited Sesame street as one of my biggest early musical influences, shaping my taste in music as a kid, and the kind of music I would later gravitate to as a grown up.”

“As a part of the “Sesame Street Kid Ako” campaign, Blanco will also be working on rock versions of two classic Sesame Street songs which will be performed at a mall concert series. Details to be announced.”

Rico Blanco bagged the “Album of the Year” award for his first solo album “Your Universe” as well as the Male Artist of the Year award.

Rapper Gloc 9 also clinched the night’s other top plum “Song of the Year” for his smash hit single “Upuan,” a song that indirectly talks about corruption in the country.

Sugarfree bested other bands like 6CycleMind, Spongecola, Hale, Itchyworms, and Rocksteddy, and won the Band of the Year award while Pinoy Dream Academy Grand Star Dreamer Yeng Constantino won the tough match for the Female Artist of the Year where she competed against international singing sensation Charice Pempengco and pop star princess Sarah Geronimo.

The throttle and stomping mood at the Tambayan OPM Awards was replaced by a solemn feel when the awards-giving body organized by FM station Tambayan 101.9 paid tribute to the late master rapper Francis M. with the Tambayani Award, which was received by Stickfiggas.

The other winners for the night include Vhong Navarro who won Best Novelty Song of the Year for his single “Pata-Pata-Pon.” Close-Up which won over other brands for the Kantamercial of the Year award.

Piolo Pascual, Jericho Rosales, Toni Gonzaga, Calla Lily, 6CycleMind, Paraluman, Rocksteddy, Imago, Sam Concepcion, Kyla, Faith Cuneta, OJ Mariano, Laarni Lozada, Ronnie Liang, Miguel Mendoza, Liezl Garcia, Cris Pastor, Michael Josh Santana and the Tambayan 101.9 DJs performed various numbers that pumped up the crowd.

Winners for the Tambayan OPM Awards were chosen based on results of text and online voting as well as scores from the program committee and panel of judges composed of Tambayan 101.9 Station Manager Eli Bruce Capuyan, Pinoy Dream Academy mentor Monette Silvestre, and former ABS-CBN President Freddie M. Garcia aka FMG.

“Imortal” is said to be the second book of the fantaserye “Lobo” which earned for Angel her very first Best Actress nomination in the International Emmy Awards. The upcoming series will perhaps become the first Vampire-serye on Philippine television.

It’s interesting to note that “Vampires” have been receiving excellent reception from viewers lately. With the success of the Twilight novels which turned to box-office hit film franchise, the HBO series “True Blood”, and the CW series “The Vampire Diaries,” the bloodsucking brands are surefire hits.

ABS-CBN is bringing the fever in the country with a twist. “Imortal”, as the title suggests, could tackle the myth about the undying night creatures with a Filipino flavor in it.

Directing the fantaserye “Imortal” is Chito Roño, the writer/director of horror box-office films “Sukob” and “Feng Shui. It’s not yet confirmed if the series will use the vampire theme as Angel Locsin keeps mum about what her role is going to be. She only said that it’s similar to “Lobo” so she might be returning as “werewolf.”

In the monster hit movie “The Twilight Saga,” werewolves and vampires are mortal enemies. I have a feeling that “Imortal”, just like in the Twilight films, will tackle the vampires versus werewolves thingy. What makes it even more exciting is that it could have the classic “Romeo and Juliet” twist into it. So if Angel is a werewolf, she will fall in love with an enemy, John Lloyd Cruz, who could play the role of a Vampire.

Joining the cast of “Imortal” are Impostor star Maja Salvador and singer/songwriter Rico Blanco. The two stars joined Angel and John Lloyd under an acting workshop being conducted by Laurice Guillen.

Rico Blanco became the first Filipino to top Hong Kong’s most prestigious music chart – the Music Bus Airplay Charts. Although some pinoy artists have entered the said chart in the past, Rico is the first one to hit the no. 1 spot.

Rico bested international artists such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce, Will.i.am and Usher, Christina Aguilera, Justin Bieber and Ludacris, and the Korean sensation the Wonder Girls. Neon Lights climbs to no. 1 of the charts within a week from its release in Music Bus Hong Kong.

Rico Blanco Releases His New Song ‘Bangon’ for Ondoy Victims originally appeared on Starmometer on October 18, 2009.

Singer-songwriter Rico Blanco, Imago vocalist Aia De Leon, and Sandwich frontman Raimund Marasigan collaborated in “Ako ang Simula,” the theme song of ABS-CBN’s election campaign, which calls on Filipinos, especially the youth, to register, vote, and make the 2010 elections work. The song, written by ABS-CBN creative director Ira Zabat and composed by Mike Villegas, is about taking the initiative to start the change in the country. A key element in the song is the signature drumbeat heard in all “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo” plugs since the campaign was first launched in 2007. Zabat said the drumbeat signifies unity and the urgent call for action.

This urgency is also reflected in the lyrics with words like “Wag nang mahimbing sa sariling mundo/Wag nang iwaldas ang dekadang bago/Ako ang tutupad sa pangakong ito/Ako ang Simula ng pagbabago.” (Don’t rest in your own world/ Don’t waste another decade/ I will be the one to fulfill this promise/I will be the start of change)

ABS-CBN Newsgathering Head Charie Villa added, “We want to tell the youth that there is no time to waste. The change you want for the country can happen now, and it can start from you. The youth, as the largest voting sector, can turn this country around. They can do it and they should.”

Rico, Aia, Raimund, and an army of Pinoy youth will brandish their “thumbmarks” of commitment in the “Ako ang Simula” music video, which will premier on Thursday (June 11) during the Kapamilya network’s annual flag-raising ceremony from 9:55am to 10:10am on ABS-CBN. The video was conceptualized and executed by the ABS-CBN’s Creative Communications Management.

Meanwhile, “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” will make a repeat of its groundbreaking May 11 multiplatform launch on Friday (June 12), the Philippines’ Independence Day.

Once again, ABS-CBN anchors will report live from different points in the country – Pinky Webb in Legaspi, Julius Babao in Iloilo, and Ces Oreña Drilon in General Santos City. “Umagang Kay Ganda” will also air live from Eastwood City in Quezon City.

Thousands of Filipinos are also expected to turn up for the nationwide voter registration to be spearheaded by the Commission on Elections. They may also sign-up as “Boto Patrollers” and take part in all “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” activities. There will be BMPM booths in Legaspi, Iloilo, General Santos, Eastwood, and at the Rizal Park in Manila.

ABS-CBN took the lead in pioneering an election advocacy for clean and honest elections. Aside from multimedia news coverage and satellite voter registrations, it has also enabled the public to get to know the possible presidential candidates in 2010 through the ANC Leadership Forum.

On Sunday (June 14), ABS-CBN’s news anchors will also appear on “ASAP ‘09” to continue engaging Filipinos here and abroad in this year-long campaign. “We have one year to change traditional politics in our country. We can do this if we act and stay vigilant as early as now,” ABS-CBN Senior Vice President for News and Current Affairs Maria Ressa said.
