Roderick has been admired for his performance in Munting Heredera, the Kapuso network’s top-rating primetime drama. With co-stars Luz Valdez and Barbara Miguel, he now guarantees laughter and fright as he portrays a closet gay named Rody in a spoof of the drama in Spooky Nights Presents: Munting Mahadera.

Munting Mahadera is about Rody’s struggle to raise his children as a single father, maintain his macho image for his mother and keep his biggest secret–that he is a homosexual.

Recently parted ways with his wife, Rody goes back to live with his mother, Felicia (Luz), and takes along with him his twin daughters: the mischievous Bembem and the well-behaved Jenjen (both played by Barbara).

Rody’s presumptuous and nosy mom believes that there is a dark secret behind his breakup with his wife. Thus, Felicia tries everything to trick him into confessing but Rody never admits until a magical creature comes out of his closet and makes him come clean.

Meanwhile, Bembem finds herself a new playground in the old and big house of Felicia. She ignores her grandmother’s instruction never to enter a certain room and accidentally frees an evil hag (Odette Khan), who has long been staying there. The hag searches for someone to live with her in the world of shadows and soon aims for Jenjen to be the one.

Can the evil hag snatch Jenjen away from Rody and Bembem? How will Felicia react upon discovering Rody’s secret? Who is the real “mahadera”–Rody, Felicia, Bembem, Jenjen or the evil hag?

While Munting Heredera makes viewers cry, this story about obedience, acceptance and familial love definitely offers thrill and humor on the first two Saturdays of September.

Coco Martin bested Star Awards winner John Lloyd Cruz (In My Life) in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Drama) category. Other nominees in the said category were Allen Dizon (Dukot), Emilio Garcia (Sagrada Familia),
Sam Milby (And I Love You So), Felix Roco (Engkwentro), Alfred Vargas (Colorum) and Gawad Urian winner Lou Veloso (Colorum).

In the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Drama, Musical or Comedy), the trophy went to Dennis Trillo for his performance in “Mano Po 6: A Mother’s Love.” Dennis bested John Apacible (Dukot), Emilio Garcia (Bente), Jojit Lorenzo (Last Supper No. 3), Star Awards winner Luis Manzano (In My Life), John Regala (Kinatay). The Gawad Urian Best Supporting Actor this year was Soliman Cruz for the indie film Himpapawid. Soliman was not nominated in the Golden Screen Awards.

On the other hand, the trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Musical or Comedy) went to Roderick Paulate (Ded Na Si Lolo). John Lloyd Cruz was also nominated in this category for his comedic performance in the box office hit movie “You Changed My Life.” The third and last nominee in this category was Joey Paras for the Cinemalaya winning film “Last Supper No. 3.”

On its pilot episode (March 22) directed by Soxie Topacio, Maricel stars in a comedy special where she plays the role of a balikbayan. She returns to the Philippines to get her daughter upon learning that her gay ex-husband is already dead. Together with her boyfriend (played by Carlos Morales), Maricel meets her ex-husband’s gay lover (Roderick Paulate) and engages in a funny dispute over the silliest things.

Maricel recalls her working experience with Soxie Topacio and her good friend Roderick Paulate:

“Of course, nakatrabaho ko na sila lahat pero ang treatment na ginawa namin, it’s going to be a lot different. Ang saya-saya working with Direk Soxie kasi wala siyang ginawa kundi tumawa…hindi lang tumawa kundi humagikgik. Ang saya namin sa set. And, of course, ang sarap na si Dick [Roderick Paulate] ang kasama kasi nakaka-miss talaga. It’s been a long time na hindi kami nakagawa ng project together.”

Perci Intalan, head of Creative and Entertainment, told the press, “We are very proud and honored that Ms. Maricel accepted our invitation to be part of the new TV5. Although, to make it clear, we are not under any illusions na sa amin lang siya.”

TV5 network executives are also cooking up a sitcom for the veteran actress.

5-Star Specials will air on TV5 every Monday starting March 22 at 8 p.m.
