2010 Gawad Tanglaw Awards, an award-giving body composed of members from the academe from various universities in the country, hailed Star Cinema’s “In My Life” as Best Picture and its director Olivia Lamasan as Best Director. The stars of the gay-themed movie bagged the awards for Best Actress (for Vilma Santos), Best Actor (for John Lloyd Cruz) and Best Supporting Actor (for Luis Manzano).

In My Life and director Olivia Lamasan were snubbed by film critics from their list of nominees for this year’s Gawad Urian. However, Vilma Santos was nominated for Best Actress and John Lloyd Cruz was nominated for Best Actor for the said film.

The Gerald Anderson-Kim Chiu romantic movie raked-in P6.65 million last Valentine weekend of February 10 to 14. Hollywood movies that premiered on the said period were “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”, the star-studded “Valentines Day” and “Wolfman.”

Here’s the Philippine box office tally for the opening weekend of February 10-14, 2010 by Box Office Mojo (premiering movies are highlighted in yellow):

This film is a reunion project of John Lloyd, Bea and box-office director Cathy Garcia-Molina. Their first movie “One More Chance” became the biggest hit of 2007. It’s also the movie that gave John Lloyd and Bea their very first Box Office King and Queen titles.

But can “Miss You Like Crazy” surpass the box office gross of “One More Chance”? The figure to beat is P152.79 Million. Can John Lloyd secure his third box-office king title?

Today is the grand opening of this post-Valentine offering from Star Cinema. I must say they got a very good opening date for this movie as there’s no “biggie” in the competition. Movies that will also debut this week are “It’s Complicated” starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, “From Paris with Love” starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, “Armored” starring Lawrence Fishburne, Matt Dillon and Milo Ventimiglia, a low-budget movie called “Infestation”, a gay-themed indie film called “Pilantik” and the Cinemalaya-winning film “Last Supper No. 3″ which is having its commercial run.

Box Office Mojo has already released the local box office estimates for January 27–31, 2010 and Star Cinema’s first movie of the year–Paano Na Kaya–bested 4 other Hollywood flicks that debuted in the said period. These movies are Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Vampire Assistant, The Blind Side and Solomon Kane.

The Kimerald-starrer raked in an estimate of P41.40 million on its first week in Mega Manila. And according to Star Cinema, the film opened with P12 million gross. Not bad for the first pinoy movie of 2010.

It’s safe to say that Paano Na Kaya is Kim and Gerald’s biggest movie yet. Their previous film, I’ve Fallen For You, had a total gross of P35,917,446 in 2007 while their first film First Day High was reported to have earned even lower. Technically, this is their fourth movie together if we are to include Shake, Rattle and Roll X where they starred in the episode “Class Picture.”

Paano Na Kaya is still being screened in selected cinemas nationwide. It was given a “B” rating by Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) and rated GP (General Patronage) by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.

“Miss You Like Crazy” reunites the box-office tandem of John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Director Cathy Garcia-Molina. Their first film “One More Chance” was the biggest hit in 2007 giving John Lloyd his first box office king title and Bea her first box office queen title.

Also starring in the movie are Maricar Reyes and Megan Young. It will open in theaters on February 24, 2010.

UPDATE: Apparently, our estimate of P70 million for the film “Ang Tanging Pamilya” was right on as Star Cinema released the official box-office gross of the film via PEP. The Ai Ai delas Alas-Erap Estrada comedy raked in P72 million. Star Cinema also revealed that their no. 1 movie of 2009, You Changed My Life, registered P208.8 million which is lower than what Box Office Mojo had reported. Anyway, this latest update will only make minor changes in the ranking. with the entry of Ang Tanging Pamilya at no. 10, the Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin starrer “Love Me Again” is no longer in the Top 10 highest-grossing pinoy films of the year.

Ang Panday is still the no. 1 top-grosser with P97.6 million. With 1 day left, can it reach the P100 million mark?

Snatching the 2nd position is Star Cinema’s I Love You, Goodbye which has now raked in a total of P91 million at the expense of Vic Sotto’s Ang Darling Kong Aswang which dropped to 3rd place.

Wapakman is still at the bottom of the list with only P2.6 million haul, one of the year’s biggest flop considering its production budget.

“Melason”, the moniker of their fans for their love team, have a promising showbiz career waiting for them after they leave the big brother house. According to reports, a horror-comedy movie is being prepared by Star Cinema for the two well-loved housemates. The working title of their movie, if plans push through, is “Pugot ang Ulo ng Ina Mo.”

The said movie will star the comedy queen Ai Ai delas Alas and will be helmed by Wenn de Ramas. Striking while the iron is hot, Star Cinema is aiming to release the movie as early as summer of 2010.
