Ted Looks Into Vintage Bomb Explosions in PH
February 2, 2012 by ABS-CBN · Leave a Comment
Several decades have passed since World War II ended but the armament used during wartime turned out to be destructive and perilous until today.
On Saturday (February 4), Ted Failon peers into the recent cases of death resulting from the explosion of vintage bombs in the country on “Failon Ngayon.”
One of the victims of these explosions was scrap dealer Alex Carbongco, 44, of Taytay, Rizal. In the evening of January 24, he was hammering a mortar bomb that he had purchased which went off and instantly killed him. His son Angelo, who was nearby when the incident occurred, sustained wounds after shrapnel hit him in the back.
The following day, a similar incident took place in Lower Bicutan, Taguig. According to reports, two members of the PNP Special Action Force (SAF) decided to bring a vintage mortar bomb to a welding shop after failing to diffuse it. The owner of the shop attended to the bomb, but before he could do anything to diffuse it, the bomb exploded, killing him and the members of the SAF. A resident was also killed, while 11 others were hurt.
Because of these explosions, questions have been raised as to whether the SAF has the capacity and proper training to handle bombs. They also highlight the possibility that a great number of vintage bombs is still scattered across the county. In his investigation, Ted learned that the number of war-era bombs recovered in the province of Rizal alone has reached 123.
What must citizens do when they discover an object that could possibly be a bomb? What should be done to prevent incidents like the explosions in Rizal and Taguig from happening again?
Find out as Ted probes into the cases of explosions caused by vintage bombs on “Failon Ngayon” on Saturday (Feb. 4), 4:30 p.m. on ABS-CBN.
Ted Investigates Effectiveness of Country’s Disaster Plan
What can people possibly do to survive a disaster if they are not warned?
This Saturday, Ted will look into the calamities that hit the country and find out whether measures could have been taken to prevent the damages they caused?
According to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Philippines is one of the world’s most hazard-prone countries. For this reason the MGB devised a geo-hazard map to inform the public what areas in the country are too dangerous for habitation.
But even so, many have perished and several millions worth of properties have been destroyed in natural calamities over the years. In 2011, Typhoons Falcon, Bebeng, Pedring, Quiel and Sendong accounted for many of these deaths and damages, which many say could have been avoided had there been proper warning systems and disaster plans.
In his investigation, Ted learned from MGB that Sitio Wawa in San Rafael, Montalban, Rizal is in danger of falling prey to landslides. According to Nanay Neneng, a resident of the sitio for the past 25 years, neither she nor her neighbors had ever been warned of the possibility.
Is the government exerting enough effort to keep its citizens out of harm’s way during times of disaster? What measures can citizens take to be safe?
Find out as Ted probes into disasters and gathers information on preventive and safety measures for times of calamity on “Failon Ngayon,” Saturday (Jan 21), 4:30 p.m. on ABS-CBN.
Ted Failon Probes into Holiday Indiscriminate Firing
January 11, 2012 by ABS-CBN · Comments Off
Ted Failon will be investigating the cases of indiscriminate firing recorded by the PNP’s Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM) during the holidays on the next episode of “Failon Ngayon” this Saturday (Jan 14), 4:30 p.m.
Among the 60 people reported by the DIDM to have fallen victim to stray bullets during the revelry was Ginalyn Tomarong, a 22-year old pregnant woman.
On Christmas Eve, Ginalyn was watching a fireworks display when she suddenly felt numb; something had hit her. What she thought was a firecracker turned out to be a bullet, and it had pierced through her bladder and exited through her back.
Another victim was 88-year old Josefina Tablan. At around 5:00 a.m on January 1, Josefina was hit by a stray bullet on her way to the church.
What ultimately happened to these victims? Will the authorities ever track down the people responsible for their misfortune? What measures is the PNP taking to address this problem?

Ted Tracks Down ‘Epal Kings and Queens’ on ‘Failon Ngayon’
January 5, 2012 by ABS-CBN · Comments Off
Ted Failon will hunt down “Epal Kings and Queens,” or politicians who affix their names or images to any signage announcing government projects, as described by Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago’s “Anti-Epal Bill”
Ted will be speaking with some of the politicians whose names are all over signs and billboards across Metro Manila. How do they feel about being tagged as “epal”?
According to University of the Philippines linguist Jovy Peregrino, “epal” comes from the word “papel,” which means role. When people are described as “epal,” it means they are putting themselves in a place or situation not appropriate of them, said the linguist.
Santiago filed the “Act Prohibiting Public Officers from Claiming Credit through Signage Announcing a Public Works Project,” or “Anti-Epal Bill” a bill outlawing the affixing of politicians’ names or images to any signage on a proposed or ongoing public works, which Santiago believes as highly unethical and inappropriate.
Find out on “Failon Ngayon” this Saturday (Jan 7), 5 p.m. on ABS-CBN as Ted Failon makes the rounds of the streets of Metro Manila to pinpoint these Epal Kings and Queens.

What awaits you by the time you reach 60? To some, they may live a cozy and comfortable life, but there are others who spend their remaining years on the streets abandoned by their own children.
Ted Failon hears the story of one of them this Saturday (Dec 10) in “Failon Ngayon” as he probes the struggles of being a senior citizen in Philippine society. He meets Nhila who worked so hard to give her son a good life, but was abandoned on the street together with her grandchild. His only son didn’t only leave her with his first born child but lives comfortably with his second wife now.

November 26, 2011 by cd · Comments Off
It’s Christmas season once again and mini-fair and amusement parks are just around the corner to bring joy and amazement to Filipino families. But how safe are these mini-theme parks nowadays?
In “Failon Ngayon” tomorrow (Nov 26), anchor Ted Failon looks back into a mini-fair accident that happened in 2006, wherein a 14-year old girl died. It was a painful and tragic scene that continues to haunt the girl’s dad, Greg Picardal, who saw two his daughters fall from the ‘Octopus’ ride.
Five years have passed since the accident killed Picardal’s daughter Kristine and caused his other daughter Kimberly a one-month confinement, but justice remains elusive. According to the president of the National Owner’s Organization of Mini Fairs and Amusement (NOOMA) Leonora Konischi, the government must support them financially so that they can improve the maintenance of their rides and avoid accidents.
