Rain or shine, John Lloyd Cruz, KC Concepcion, Erik Santos, Yeng Constantino and Pooh sang their hearts out for Euro-Pinoys.

“Marry me, Yeng!” exclaimed an eager fan of Multi-platinum Recording Artist Yeng Constantino amid tens of thousands of Filipinos who flocked to the Lampton Park, Hounslow for the 27th Barrio Fiesta sa London.

A total of 45,000 people arrived on July 16 and 17 from as far as Amsterdam and other parts of Europe just to see Yeng and their other favorite Kapamilya stars like “Imortal” sensation John Lloyd Cruz, “The Buzz” co-host KC Concepcion, “ASAP Rocks” mainstay Erik Santos and “Banana Split” wacky comedian Pooh. Neither the rain nor the ongoing train maintenance at the Picadilly line servicing Central London stopped Euro-Pinoys from travelling all the way to Hounslow.

The Prince of Pop, Erik Santos, headlined the Saturday show while John Lloyd, KC, Pooh and Yeng did the jam-packed Sunday show. Pooh let loose his comic impersonation of Manny Pacquiao. John Lloyd, who was recently proclaimed by a Philippine magazine as this year’s Most Beautiful Star, plunged into the sea of people so as not to disappoint those who wanted to have an up-close-and-personal encounter with him. In a sweet banter with KC, John Lloyd tickled the audience’s fancy, as if hinting an upcoming love team. In her solo performance, KC made the male crowd go “ooh” with her lovely voice and sexy moves. But, it was Yeng Constantino, the First Pinoy Dream Academy Grand Star Dreamer, who proved to be the biggest surprise of the TFC Show. Her back-to-back rendition of the Beatles medley and the Air Supply medley brought the house down.

“It’s a great feeling to be here to witness how our Kapamilyas just love our stars so much that they came to watch and stayed despite the rain,” said Mr. Raffy Lopez, the Chief Operating Officer of ABS-CBN Global who experienced the magnitude of the London Barrio Fiesta first hand.

“We’re thankful to the Philippine Centre for trusting us once again to be its partner in mounting the biggest event in the region, to the presentors Western Union, SMDC and Lebara Mobile and the major sponsors Ericsson Money Services, Sta. Lucia Properties, LBC, and Globe Telecoms, and to all of our Kapamilyas who have been supporting TFC for many, many years,” said Mr. Edgardo Garcia, the Managing Director of ABS-CBN Europe and Middle East.

As supporters leave the Lampton Park, bringing home wonderful memories of this year’s highly successful Barrio Fiesta, they can only expect more next year when another star-studded show from TFC comes to Europe to warm their hearts and brighten an otherwise rainy day.

The Filipino Channel (TFC), the largest 24/7 in-language television network serving Filipinos all over the world, announced recently its first ever global affinity campaign that will be launched simultaneously in all regions where TFC is carried – a first in its 17-year history.

Tayo Ang TFC (We Are TFC) will kick off on April 3 via a new station identity (SID) on the show ASAP Rocks on ABS-CBN in the Philippines and on TFC in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Japan and Australia. Lending his voice to the new SID’s theme song, Tayo Ang TFC, is world-renowned singer Jed Madela, 2005 Senior Grand Champion Performer of the World at the prestigious World Championship of the Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Burbank, California.

The campaign highlights the common ground that TFC shares with Filipinos who migrated to other countries. It mirrors their life stories and experiences from the homeland to their struggles and achievements in their adopted land. It shows how TFC has become part and parcel of the Filipinos’ lives overseas – bringing joy, pride, a sense of home and family.

According to TFC’s Global Customer Engagement Head John-D J. Lazatin, “As we launch our new station identity, we look at ourselves from the eyes of our customers. To them, we are not just a channel and a provider of various services. Through the years, TFC has been a Kapamilya (family member) that helps lead brighter, happier lives wherever Filipinos choose to build their dreams. TFC is a beacon of light that will always journey with the Filipino as he brings out his own light into the world for himself, his family and his community.”

“Tayo Ang TFC emphasizes that no matter where we are, our common Filipino identity and experience connect us all together as one global community. That is what we are celebrating in this campaign,” said ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez. “TFC is The Filipino Community worldwide, people who bring the light of hope, joy and triumph wherever they may be.”

TFC has been recognized by the PromaxBDA World Awards for its outstanding SIDs: Silver Award for Isang Dugo, Isang Lahi, Isang Musika (One Blood, One Race, One Music) in 2005 and another Silver Award for Lipad ng Pangarap (Flight of A Dream) in 2006. The PromaxBDA Awards is the only competition organized by the international association of entertainment professionals to recognize excellence in Marketing, Design and Creative Content and serve as the industry standard for excellence.

Following the global launch of the Tayo Ang TFC SID this Sunday, the campaign will go multimedia, with expansive visibility on-air, online, on-print and on ground.

After Martin Nievera, Lea Salonga, Gary Valenciano and Charice Pempengco, the next world-renowned singer who serves as “The Voice” of this year’s station ID of The Filipino Channel (TFC) is no other than Jed Madela.

Jed himself is a Global Filipino who brings honor to his country wherever his passion for singing leads him. He first made waves in 2003 when he won the Best Voice of Asia Male Singer of the Year in Kazakhstan. Not long after, he caught the western music industry’s attention at the World Championship of the Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Burbank, California. Jed got all the major awards, bested over 3,500 acts from 51 countries and became the 2005 Senior Grand Champion Performer of the World.

After winning the highly coveted WCOPA title, Jed found himself in front of eager producers and agents who offered him several recording and acting opportunities in Hollywood, “They wanted to fix my papers and let me stay there permanently,” Jed recalls. But Jed decided to return to the Philippines. “I want to share the victory with my fellow Filipinos,” he says.

As his way of giving back to his home country, Jed breathes life to “Tayo ang TFC”, dedicated to the millions of Global Filipinos he represents. TFC’s 17th anniversary station ID is in celebration not just of the success of TFC but also of the enhanced lives of overseas Filipinos and their families.

According to Mr. John-D J. Lazatin, the Customer Engagement Head of TFC, “As we launch our new station identity, we look at ourselves from the eyes of our customers. To them, we are not just a channel and a provider of various services. Through the years, we have been a Kapamilya that help lead brighter, happier lives wherever they choose to prosper. TFC is a beacon of light that will always journey with the Filipino as he brings out his own light into the world for himself, his family and his community.”

For two consecutive years, TFC has been recognized by no less than the PromaxBDA World Awards for its outstanding station IDs: Silver Award for “Isang Dugo, Isang Lahi, Isang Musika” in 2005 and another Silver Award for “Lipad ng Pangarap” in 2006. The PromaxBDA Awards is the only competition organized by the international association of entertainment professionals to recognize excellence in Marketing, Design and Creative Content and serve as the industry standard for excellence. Hopefully, with Jed rendering the theme for TFC’s new station ID, the world would once again recognize Filipino ingenuity.

This Sunday (April 3), watch out for the unveiling of “Tayo ang TFC” in ASAP Rocks on ABS-CBN in the Philippines and TFC in other countries around the world.

Philippine movie and television’s biggest stars recently raised temperatures all over the United Kingdom and London with another show-stopping event that only The Filipino Channel (TFC) can bring. Dubbed as “The Heartthrobs”, Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby and John Lloyd Cruz certainly did not disappoint Kapamilyas who attended the first ever ABS-CBN FilExpo 2010 in London with special performances to match their sexy good looks and charm.

Joining The Heartthrobs are box-office prince Gerald Anderson and the ever-radiant Drama Princess Bea Alonzo at ExCel London, right in the heart of the famous London Royal Docks. These Kapamilya stars regaled the throng of crowds bringing smiles to Filipinos who have long been away from home. Bringing more cheer and laughter to almost 3,000 attendees is the versatile comedienne and TV host Pokwang.

TFC, in its commitment to bring the best in Philippine entertainment to Kapamilyas all over the world, has recently announced new rates for both existing and new TFC subscribers in the UK and Europe. For only £19 or €25 monthly, subscribers can enjoy their favorite ABS-CBN shows like “Showtime” and “Imortal” and get the latest Philippine news from “TV Patrol”. According to ABS-CBN Europe and Middle East Managing Director Mr. Edgardo Garcia, “through this price restructuring, we hope to provide better service for all our subscribers and entice our other Kapamilyas to subscribe to TFC as well.”

Always looking to bring elements of home to Filipinos globally, TFC has once again succeeded in serving, connecting and instilling national pride among Filipinos in England and Europe. “We at TFC are very grateful to the Filipino community in the United Kingdom for the overwhelming response and continued patronage of ABS-CBN shows and talents.” Garcia said. He went on to address the Global Pinoys by saying, “You can be sure that TFC will continue to bring our subscribers only the best shows at rates that are easy on the pocket.”

The highly-anticipated match between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito is to be telecast on TFC.

It’s that time of the year again when Pinoys from across the globe are at a standstill – worries are forgotten, feelings of sadness and loneliness fade away, replaced by excitement and anticipation for one big event. It’s not Christmas, and he isn’t Santa Claus, but Manny Pacquiao sure packs a wallop every time he enters the ring. The Filipino Channel (TFC) will once again be right in the center of the action as the “Pambansang Kamao” takes to the ring once again. Broadcasting live from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, TFC will once again give Global Pinoys premier access to Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s fight as he stakes his claim for a historic eighth world championship when he takes on Antonio Margarito on November 13 (November 14, Manila time).

TFC subscribers from the Middle East, Europe and Australia will have the special opportunity of watching the Pacquiao-Margarito fight for the vacant WBC Super Welterweight title, as it happens with veteran sportscaster Ronnie Nathanielsz providing ringside analysis with fellow boxing aficionado Ed Tolentino. “Watching Manny in action is always exciting,” says ABS-CBN Global Content Head Ned Legaspi. “We at TFC feel however that having a blow-by-blow account in our native tongue will make the fight resonate even more with our Kapamilyas.”

The legend of Manny Pacquiao has done nothing but continue to grow over the past few years. Even as he has taken down the likes of Oscar dela Hoya, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Cotto, TFC has been there to bring his fights to as many Filipinos as possible worldwide.

Margarito has a lot at stake as he‘s aching to rebuild his reputation that has been tarnished by controversy after he used illegal substances in his boxing gloves. Now, he sees defeating the man credited in international boxing circles as the pound-for-pound best fighter alive today as his one big opportunity to return to the top of the mountain.

TFC enjoins the rest of the boxing world to witness war in the ring with Margarito setting his sights on redemption. “We’re excited at the prospect of once again bringing a Pacquiao fight to our Kapamilyas around the world,” Legaspi says. “There’s nothing quite like the spectacle of a Manny Pacquiao bout that can thrill so many Global Pinoys and we at TFC can’t wait to share it with our subscribers once more.”

On his last day in the United States, President Benigno “Noynoy”Aquino III made television history by holding a live town hall forum with global Filipinos through the facilities of The Filipino Channel (TFC) at ABS-CBN International’s studio in Redwood Shores.

Hosted by Balitang America’s Gel Santos-Relos, North America News Bureau Chief Ging Reyes, and Adobo Nation’s Karmina Constantino, the program was aired live globally on ANC (ABS-CBN News Channel) and gave overseas Filipinos an opportunity to address their concerns directly to President Aquino.

The president’s audience included Filipinos from Northern California, London, Tokyo and Dubai, as well as from New Jersey, Los Angeles and Toronto, Canada. ABS-CBN Global used state-of-the-art satellite and video conferencing facilities to connect overseas Filipinos with Aquino for his first-ever town hall meeting as president.

The online community, through www.abs-cbn.com and TFCNow was also part of the hour-long conversation with the President.

Aquino shared with the Filipino communities the good news about his first trip to the United States. As Manolo Lopez, Chairman of the Lopez Group of Companies, put it, “The president did not just eat hamburgers and hotdogs in the US. He also brought home the bacon.”

P-Noy welcomed by (from left to right) ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez, Lopez Group Chairman Manolo Lopez; Lopez Group Chairman Emeritus Oscar Lopez and ABS-CBN CEO Gabby Lopez

Together with the $434 million grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, President Aquino told his audience that he received nearly $2.8 billion in pledges and investment commitments from US businessmen.

However, Aquino refused to rate his performance on his first foreign trip, saying, “Mahirap ho namang mag-grade dahil tinuruan ho tayo ng humility, dapat maging humble. Baka ho yung tatay at nanay ko nanonood ngayon, batukan ako pag nagyabang.”

The President answered questions from the audience ranging from the prosecution of his predecessor, human trafficking, immigration reforms, veterans equity, to jobs and population control.

The Chief Executive assured that his administration is cracking down on human trafficking syndicates, while giving priority to helping OFWs currently on death row in the Middle East. However, Aquino said he was not inclined to give in to requests to set up a separate department of OFWs. There are enough agencies, the president explained, that should just improve their coordination and performance. “I respect the OFW community pero parang failure ho ng bansa kung parating lalabas ang mga mamamayang yan. Dapat ho kung aalis ng bansa dahil gusto, imbes na napilitan. Kung gagawa ng department of OFWs parang nanigurado na tayo na wala na talagang mangyayari sa atin,” said Aquino.

The President said he would look into the possibility of raising humanitarian grounds to address the crackdown on illegals in the United Kingdom. But he drew the line at asking for legalization of undocumented immigrants. “Paano ho ba, ako lalapit kay Barack Obama at sabihin ko, puwede ba yung ibang illegal immigrants bahala ka na, pero yung sa amin baka puwede pagbigyan mo na? At a point in time when there is so much loss of jobs and closing down of businesses, this is the wrong time to appeal at para nga hong wala sa lugar,” said Aquino.

Still, he assured that there are skills retraining program for those who may be deported back into the country.

The President also challenged the Filipino community in the U.S. to unite and become a force in their adopted country. “United, I think nothing can stop us, but divided, we’re just a joke,” said the President.

There were some light moments too, as the President answered personal questions –

From what kind of music does he have in his iPod — “Halo-halo ho. May OPM, konting broadway, may disco, trance, may house. Mamili ho kayo, except rap.”

To who helped him pack his suitcases for this trip — “Sinong nag-impake? Meron akong kasambahay, si Yoly, matagal na sa akin. Pero dahil kumakatawan tayo sa Pilipinas, mga kaibigan ng kapatid kong si Kris, sina Paul Cabral at tumulong din mag-style si Liz Uy, para pagdating dito maayos-ayos po ang itsura at di naman tayo masyadong gusgusin humarap sa UN at mga pagkalalaking kumpanyang hinihikayat natin sa Pilipinas.”

For his first global conversation with kababayans, many participants, including those from the chat rooms gave the president high marks for straightforward answers, his candor, wit and humor.

MC Canlas of San Francisco said, “(The town hall meeting) did an amazing job of educating the Filipinos worldwide. Its impact will be felt for a long, long time.” “Proud to be Pinoy and proud to have you as our president!” said Gemma of Daly City.

There was room for introspection as well. Though he felt he was not given a honeymoon period, President Aquino said he has learned to roll with the punches. “If we have shortcomings and it’s pointed out to us, good. And we will correct and will try to perfect ourselves. I know what I do not know and I will seek to know.”

David Foster and Friends Tour goes to 10 cities in North America in October and November.

Garnering 15 Grammys (and an unprecedented 44 nominations), seven Canadian Juno Awards, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations and countless monster recording hits with the world’s greatest singers in a career spanning 40 years – and counting – doesn’t just happen to anyone – unless you’re a born “Hit Man” named David Foster.

Continuing the success of David Foster and Friends last May at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, TC Entertainment and ABS-CBN International’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) have signed a contract to promote 2009 Hit Man David Foster and Friends in its North American tour: Chicago, IL (Oct 21); New York, NY (Oct 23); Newark, NJ (Oct 24); Boston, MA (Oct 25); Atlanta, GA (Oct 28); Tampa, FL (Oct 30); Hollywood, FL (Nov 1); Los Angeles, CA (Nov 5); San Jose, CA (Nov 6); and Vancouver, BC (Nov 8). TFC is the official Asian Media Partner for Television.

In Foster’s recording studio in Los Angeles, TFC Production Manager John-D Lazatin sat down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with Foster. Here are gems from the Hit Man:

TFC: Is there a difference between David Foster the composer/artist and the producer?

Foster: When I go to the doctor’s office and they ask for occupation, I still put musician. I’ve been playing piano since I was 5. All the time, all the things that’s been happening in my life since I started playing piano have always been a result of my being a musician and that’s how I think of myself.

TFC: I read your book, “Hitman: Forty Years Making Music, Topping the Charts, and Winning Grammys”. Lesson number one is “Always go with what you love.” Is that always true?

Foster: The phenomenon that exists in this country and probably the whole world is that when a child turns 17, he or she all of a sudden is forced to make the biggest decision in his or her life: what am I gonna train for as a living for the rest of my life? So at 17, they go, “Hmm, do I wanna try medical school, do I wanna be a lawyer?” But you know, not everybody has a passion at 17. So, most people end up doing what they’re taught to do, not what they love to do. I was one of the fortunate ones that got to do what I love doing. By age 10, I knew what I love to do and I knew that was how I’m gonna make my living. So, my recommendation is always try to go for what you love, not what you’re taught to do.

TFC: If you were not a musician, what would you be?

Foster: I’ve always joked that if I were not a musician, if I had to be a shoe salesman, I’d like to be the best shoe salesman on the planet. I love airplanes. I’m a pilot. I would have loved to be a professional pilot. Had I had more talent in the athletic world, I would have loved to be a hockey player because I played hockey when I was a kid and I was pretty good but not good enough to be a pro. There are other avenues, but the main thing is the discipline that I have as a musician and as a songwriter-producer. That discipline that I learned at a really early age I would have applied to anything. Maybe my gift wasn’t even music; maybe my gift was that I’m disciplined.

TFC: What’s the secret in staying in this industry? How can you stay for 40 years in this business?

Foster: I don’t know if there’s a secret in staying in any industry. The music industry is very youth driven. As you may have read in my book, I credit the man named Ronnie Hawkins for teaching me that you need to sometimes retreat and attack in another direction. The 70s for me was great – I was a musician, everybody wanted me. I became a producer in the 80s and it went great. Then at the end of the 80s, my career just kinda tanked and all of a sudden I wasn’t making hits anymore for a couple of years. You have two choices at that point: you can keep banging your head against the wall and pushing forward in that same direction, or you can do this (hand motions towards another direction) and I did that – I did Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable” album which ended up being a huge hit. That thrust me into the 90s where I had great run with Celine, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, etcetera. At the end of the 90s, that same thing happened: I came up against the wall. All of a sudden, my sound wasn’t on the radio anymore so I went around and did Bocelli, Bublé and Grobin.

TFC: Do you believe in luck?

Foster: My mother taught me that it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. I don’t think I believe in luck because they say that luck is when hard work meets opportunity. And I do believe in that because I think you always have to be prepared. There’s been so many times in my life where I’ve been somewhere and a singer has come up to me and said, wow, I really like you to hear my stuff and whatever and I say, okay, give me a CD. Oh, I don’t have one on me. I’ll say, okay, sing for me. Oh, I don’t know what to sing. That’s crazy! Be prepared. Luck is opportunity meeting hard work.

TFC: What did you know about Filipino artists before you met Charice?

Foster: Before I met Charice, I knew that the Philippines and the Filipinos were great lovers of music and especially, it seems great lovers of my particular kind of music. The first time I heard of a Filipino artist that I loved was Lea Salonga. She sang so beautifully in “Mulan”. And of course she was cast in “Miss Saigon”. She was incredible and we actually almost worked together. And then this new kid from Journey got everyone’s attention. But I’ve always believed, at least for the last 5 to 6 years, from my trips to Asia, that the next huge big star will be Asian. I believe that Charice is the one. It just makes sense. There’s a billion-and-a-half Asians. Twenty or thirty years ago with the Japanese, they used to copy American music. But in the last 10 years or so, the Asians have really found their own sound. It’s just not copying anymore. They have such rich heritage to draw from, thousands of years of music to draw from. And I think it’s all coming out. You see that in Charice, she’s so well-rounded. I believe she’s the next big star.

TFC: After Charice, are you watching out for other performers from the Philippines?

Foster: I’ve yet to go to the Philippines but I’m excited to go there. I want to know more about this country and this culture that has embraced American music for so many years. It’s really no different from what England did in the beginning. England in the beginning copied American music. The Beatles’ favorite artists were Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. They took it and made it their own and I believe that’s what’s happening to the Filipino community now, too. They love the American culture and the American music scene. But they’re now taking it and making it their own. So, I’m sure if you drill down the Philippines, you’re gonna find a lot more talent. But I don’t look for talent though, talent finds me.

TFC: What’s your idea of David Foster and Filipino Friends?

Foster: What would be exciting is for one is to have some of the local artists perform with me and sing my songs. Because the David Foster and Friends traditionally, at least with the last two or three concerts, and the tour I’m about to do in 12 cities in America is my music so that is sort of what it’s all about. So, having Filipino artists, young or old, singing my music will be a lot of fun plus I think we should have a talent search and find somebody – a complete unknown – that could win a spot to open the show.

TFC: How long have you known about The Filipino Channel?

Foster: I knew about The Filipino Channel. My friends Michael and Millie (Gurfinkel) have told me first about it and it’s spectacular what you guys do. It’s amazing – the coverage has been incredible. I’d like to say to all the Filipino communities across America that I am going on tour in October and November and, of course, I will be bringing Charice. I would love for all of you to come out and see the show. Come and support me which would be great, but most importantly, come and support Charice because I believe that Charice is going to be the next national treasure for the Philippines.
