‘The Last Prince’ Breaks ‘Agua Bendita’s Winning Streak in Mega Manila originally appeared on Starmometer on June 20, 2010.

This is the highest position that a kapuso program has reached for a long time in the kapamilya dominated Taylor Nelson Sofres nationwide tv ratings. Usually, the top 4 to 5 positions in the nationwide survey were occupied by ABS-CBN shows but last Friday, April 30, The Last Prince became the second most-watched program nationwide next to Agua Bendita.

Can this be a trend that one kapuso program will once again capture the top spot nationwide? The last GMA-7 programs to top the nationwide tv ratings were MariMar and Dyesebel starring Marian Rivera. We will see in the coming days.

AGB Mega Manila TV Ratings (April 27-29): ‘The Last Prince’ is Leveling with ‘Agua Bendita’ originally appeared on Starmometer on May 1, 2010.

The Last Prince starring Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal bested Darna last Friday night with a rating of 29.9 percent. However, Darna regained leadership last Monday night with 34.7 percent.

Full House, on the other hand, spoiled the pilot episode of the Judy Ann Santos-starrer Habang May Buhay. The Richard Gutierrez-Heart Evangelista-starrer posted a rating of 28.1% while the pilot episode of Habang May Buhay garnered 28% flat.

Weekend viewership was shared by both ABS-CBN and GMA. The kapuso network dominated last Saturday with Eat Bulaga topping the daytime race and Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho leading the primetime race. Sunday, on the other hand, belongs to ABS-CBN. ASAP XV topped the daytime race while Pinoy Big Brother Double UP hit no. 1 in the primetime race.

The Last Prince Hits No. 1, Habang May Buhay Debuts at No. 8 in Mega Manila originally appeared on Starmometer on February 2, 2010.

The Last Prince tells the fairy tale story of a kingdom in the clouds called Paladino. This magical realm is headed by the noble King Adorno and his beautiful wife Queen Lamara with their three children Prinsesa Saraya, Prinsipe Javino, and Prinsipe Almiro.

The peaceful and perfect life in Paladino is suddenly threatened when Prince Javino went missing. His disappearance is orchestrated by the most powerful and wicked black Diwani named Alwana. Diwanis are the powerful wizards in the kingdom.

Using her black magic and sorcery, Alwana pushes Prince Javino towards the magic mirror, transporting him to the earthly world. She wants him to fall in love with a mortal so she could claim the throne and take over Paladino.

But, an unexpected tragedy shatters the mirror and Prince Javino is permanently trapped on earth. The entire kingdom is devastated by news that the Prince is dead. There is instant confusion and disarray in Paladino.

This incident changes the life of the mischievous Prince Almiro. King Adorno immediately declares him successor to the throne, the next king of Paladino.

But, Prince Almiro is not yet ready to become a king. So the head Diwani, Rizayo, suggests he gets married. All the maidens in the kingdom were called so Prince Almiro could choose his lucky bride.

Once of those who came is Bawana, the daughter of Alwana. Because of her hideous face, Alwana uses her magic to make Bawana look beautiful. But Prince Almiro discovers their deception and he sends her away.

Bawana is enraged so she puts a curse on Prince Almiro. His face becomes distorted and only true love could break the curse.

So Prince Almiro, together with his three loyal allies Rosata, Onuro, Anexi, sets off to the mortal world to fulfill his mission. But Bawana gives him only three chances to find his woman.

By means of Bawana’s curse, they were trapped in a magical mansion and once inside, Prince Almiro’s warped face disappears but once outside, his cursed face is revealed.

On his third and final attempt, Prince Almiro meets Lara. Despite his horrible face, the kind-hearted and simple Lara falls in love with him.

Can Lara’s kiss finally break Bawana’s curse on Prince Almiro?

It turns out that Prince Javino is still alive and suffers from the new spell of Bawana. Can the two brothers destroy the evil Alwana and her daughter Bawana? Will Prince Almiro give up the throne for his love Lara? Will the peace and order return in the Kingdom of Paladino?

The Last Prince is directed by Mac Alejandre. The script is written by seasoned headwriter RJ Nuevas. The set is designed by Richard Somes, fresh from his winning MMFF’s Best Festival Production in “Ang Panday.” Roy Red is the production designer. The fabulous costumes were made by fashion designers Jerome Ang, who represented the Philippines in various international fashion design competitions and Aries Lagat, the grand winner in Project Runway Philippines Season 1.

The Last Prince premieres Monday night, January 11, on GMA-7.

GMA unleashed its telebabad line-up for 2010 in all theaters showing Metro Manila Film Festival movies on Christmas Day.

GMA’s dominance in the AGB Mega Manila TV Ratings was greatly challenge in 2009 as ABS-CBN’s May Bukas Pa, Tayong Dalawa and Pinoy Big Brother Double UP were able to snatch the no. 1 position in the primetime race from time to time.

In 2010, they prepared a line-up of new shows that may continue their Mega Manila leadership or may result to ABS-CBN taking over the dominance. It all depends in the people’s reception on these programs.

Here’s my take on this line-up:

CAPTAIN BARBELL: ANG PAGBABALIK – Richard Gutierrez is reprising his role as Mars Ravelo’s most popular male superhero. I understand that the first Captain Barbell tv series was generally a hit but i’m not sure if people will welcome with open arms the return of this series starring the same actor who played the role. Kung pumili sila ng bagong artista to play Captain Barbell, like for example JC de Vera, then there’s something new to look forward to.

THE LAST PRINCE – The love team of Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal have experienced ups and downs in 2009. Their breakthrough was the soap “Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin?” when it hit no. 1 nationwide. They experienced setback when their movie “Nandito Ako…” flopped at the box-office. Their pre-primetime series “All My Life” performed mediocre in the tv ratings. But this time, GMA is putting them in the main primetime block with support from Rosalinda stars Geoff Eigenmann and Carla Abellana. I’m pretty optimistic with this one as this is a fantaserye and kids will love it. This series could bring the “Alkris” magic back on track.

ENCANTADIA: THE SECOND SAGA – I think the people had enough of Encantadia and bringing it back in 2010 is not a good idea. But if they will put Claudine Barretto in this series, then perhaps it can perform magic in the tv ratings one more time.

DIVA – A music-themed teleserye starring Regine Velasquez, Mark Anthony Fernandez and Glaiza de Castro. I have a feeling that Diva is not going to be a heavy drama series. Nevertheless, it’s a fresh addition to the telebabad line-up as this one is original, it’s not a fantaserye and it’s not a koreanovela or movie remake. It’s up to its promotion on how GMA will introduce this all-new teleserye to the televiewers.

PANDAY KIDS – This series is topbilled by Jolina Magdangal, JC de Vera, Polo Ravales, Lovi Poe, Jackie Rice and Buboy Villar. From the looks of it, si Buboy Villar lang ang “kid” dito sa why Panday Kids as title? I feel bad for Jolina Magdangal who should have gotten the kontra-bida role in Diva. I also feel bad for JC de Vera who should have been given a better “lead” role. But who knows, maybe Panday Kids will be a hit just like ABS-CBN’s Kung Fu Kids before.

ENDLESS LOVE – The tandem of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera was able to top nationwide tv ratings via MariMar and Dyesebel. Their third series, “Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang”, was mediocre. This time they will be reunited with the Philippine adaptation of the hit koreanovela Endless Love: Autumn in My Heart. I’m also optimistic about this one as the first installment of Endless Love was embraced by televiewers. And the chemistry between real-life couple of Dingdong and Marian is undeniable. From the six, i think Endless Love and The Last Prince exude the most promise.

Also starring in “The Last Prince” are Rosalinda loveteam Carla Abellana and Geoff Eigenmann who are now demoted playing support to “Alkris.”

The main villain will be portrayed Angelu De Leon as Queen of Kasamaans. Aljur’s opponent will be Survivor hunk Jace Flores who will be playing the role of Prince Jakarto.

Other royalties in the fantaserye includes Eula Valdez as Queen Samara, Emilio Garcia as King Brigido and Chanda Romero as Queen Namara. Karen delos Reyes, on the other hand, takes the role of Lidia.

Extended cast includes Chynna Ortaleza as Princess Hamara, younger sister of Ula, Paolo Ballesteros as Oppose, Bianca King as Dena, Stef Prescott as Mandriva, Pauleen Luna as Parlay and Bubbles Paraiso as Mariquilla.

Helmed by Mac Alejandre, The Last Prince will begin airing on January 11, 2010.

This time, they will star in a fantasy series with the working title “The Last Prince” and it will air in the primetime block!

The Last Prince has a fairy tale logline and it will be directed by Mac Alejandre. Supporting the kapuso network’s hottest young love team are Eula Valdes, Angelu de Leon, Chanda Romero, Chynna Ortaleza, Bianca King, Emilio Garcia, Karen delos Reyes, Bubbles Paraiso, and Paolo Ballesteros.

They started shooting the series this week aiming for a January 2010 release.
