Wil Time Bigtime has toppled all competing programs during its timeslot last Saturday (August 13), according to Nielsen Media Research.

The people’s show managed to get a 6.5% AMR or 28.8% audience share in MegaTam, compared to ABS-CBN’s ratings by daypart of 4.9% AMR (21.3% share) and GMA’s 5.8% AMR (25.3% share).

Among all game-variety shows, Wil Time Bigtime was the most watched last Saturday; generating the highest number of viewers in nationwide urban TV. Based on Nielsen’s NuTam data last Saturday (August 13), Wil Time Bigtime generated almost 2.7 million viewers as compared to ABS-CBN’s The Price is Right with only 2.1 million viewers. Moreover, Wil Time Bigtime captured almost 400,000 more viewers versus GMA’s Manny Many Prizes, which only posted an average of 2.3 million viewers nationwide.

But despite the show’s continuous success in the ratings game, Willie Revillame (or Kuya Wil as he is fondly called by millions of Filipinos who love him) is still in awe that even after years of dealing with a multitude of stories from different individuals via his TV programs, stirring accounts are still waiting to be told. Take for example when they featured differently-abled people in Wil Time Bigtime segment recently—a very first for Kuya Wil since he ventured into TV hosting.

All the way from Baguio—with only their 5-year-old daughter serving as their eyes throughout their commute—a blind married couple traversed the chilly road of the north at two in the morning and made it to the audition venue in Quezon City just before noon. JR, a blind massage therapist, was selected to join the segment where at least P3.5 million worth of prizes are at stake. But during the interview portion with Kuya Wil, JR and wife Shirley were too modest to accept too much money from Kuya Wil. For the Wil Time Bigtime host, it’s not every day that people refuse money they think is beyond what they needed. Instead of the usual P5,000 he hands to a contestant, he gave JR a total of P37,000. “Kahit hindi na po ako manalo ngayon malaking tulong na po ‘to. Hindi ko na hangad na makuha ang jackpot,” JR said, his voice cracking in emotion. He added that he would use the money to start a small vegetable buy-and-sell enterprise in Baguio.

The Wil Time Bigtime host admitted that the blind masseur’s character gave him a personal awakening. “Alam mo, JR, inspirasyon kayo sa’ming mga normal na tao. Inspirasyon kayo sa’min na minsan marami pang hinahangad sa buhay, marami pang hinihingi. Pero samantalang kayo simple lang,” Kuya Wil said. “Napakaswerte namin na naging bisita namin kayong lahat kasi namumulat kami kung gaano kahalaga ang tunay na pagmamahal sa kapwa.” Apart from giving him P37,000, Kuya Wil vowed that Wil Time Bigtime would arrange the family’s transportation back to Baguio.

Joseph “Nonoy” Murillo could not help but burst into tears and sprawl himself on Wil Time Bigtime’s LED floor when host Willie Revillame announced that he answered the mega jackpot question correctly.

“Ma, hindi ko alam ang sagot,” Nonoy uttered in surprise while his mother tried to hold him up to accept his prizes including P1 million cash, a Foton van and a house and lot from Camella Homes. He sets the record as the first to win the mega jackpot last May 26 (Thursday), just 12 days after Wil Time Bigtime was launched last May 14.

“Ganyan kasimple ang buhay, dapat lumalaban gaya ni Nonoy,” Willie told the audience after handing Nonoy a P1 million mock check (facsimile of a bank cheque).

The 20-year old gardener and service crew from Paranaque City is a fighter, indeed. Despite his age and lack of money, Nonoy was able to support his education while providing for his family at the same time. “Mataas na ang edad ko pero sinikap ko pa rin po makatapos ng hayskul sa pamamagitan ng pag-woworking student,” he said in an interview with TV5 newscast AKSYON.

Nonoy graduated from high school last March and is planning to pursue a college degree using a portion of money from his cash prize. He also plans to juggle work and school to support the education of his five siblings.

Earlier in the game, Nonoy was ecstatic after making it to the “Wil Time Bigtime” segment. “Napakalaking karangalan po sa amin na makasama sa nag-iisang programang itong nagbibigay ng pag-asa sa’ming mahihirap,” he said.

Nonoy made it to the “Mega Jackpot” round after he finished the mind-challenging game “Step In, Step Out.” For the final question, Willie asked,“Sa listahan ng PAGASA ng mga bagyo ngayong 2011, ano ang magiging pangalan ng panlimang bagyo?” to which Nonoy guessed, “[Letter] C. Egay.”

The people’s show continues to serve family-oriented entertainment with bits of inspiring stories for its millions of viewers every night (Monday to Friday) at 6:30pm and on Saturdays at 5pm only on TV5.

Pangilinan, in an earlier interview, mentioned that it’s highly possible that “Willing Willie” or Revillame’s new show will start airing on May 14. The Kapatid Network, on the other hand, will release an official statement regarding this matter on May 12, 2 days before the target date of the Wiltime Bigtime‘s pilot episode.

It can be recalled that Willing Willie was suspended by the MTRCB because of its controversial March 12 episode (CLICK HERE FOR RELATED ARTICLE) which coincidentally happened on “Wiltime Bigtime” segment of the show.

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has released its decision regarding the controversial March 12 episode of “Willing Willie” that showed a 6-year-old boy dancing like a macho dancer.

The verdict: one month suspension!

Here is the decision of the board as released via their official website mtrcb.gov.ph:

e. Pagpapatibay sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) at iba pang ahensiya ng gobyerno upang matiyak ang pangangalaga sa mga karapatan ng mga bata.

g. Pagbubuo ng Standards Compliance Group, na binubuo ng (i) the Standards Advisory Board, at ng (ii) Compliance Unit.

i. Pagtatalaga ng “Guidelines on the Treatment of Children as Viewers, Subjects, Talents or Participants,” sa pakikipagtulungan sa Philippine Children’s Television Foundation.

Sa Desisyon, nagpaalala ang MTRCB: “Celebrities and TV personalities should exercise the highest degree of care and diligence, as they are the most seen, and their reach and influence is far greater than any other individual. It is the responsibility of the network and their talents to educate themselves regarding: gender sensitivity, children and women’s rights issues; the rights of indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and other marginalized sectors of the society. Let this Decision stand as a reminder to all networks, producers, directors, public figures, celebrities and hosts that: We are all advocates. And as advocates, we are duty-bound to fight for a TV industry that does not only make us ‘eat for a day,’ but an industry that inspires, transforms, and moves us, to live better lives.”

MARY GRACE POE LLAMANZARES
Chairperson

Because the one month suspension includes the number of days of Willing Willie‘s voluntary suspension which started last April 11, 2011, TV5 can start airing the show this Monday, May 9.

The committee approved the inclusion of the show’s voluntary suspension in the 1 month suspension because of TV5′s self-regulatory measures, voluntary suspension, formal apology, admission of responsibility, and that this is the first offense of “Willing Willie.”

Willie Revillame, the producers of his show and the management of TV5 issued a public apology regarding the controversial segment from the March 12 episode of “Willing Willie.”

Here is TV5′s official statement regarding the recent controversy involving its main host Willie Revillame and the 6-year-old Willing Willie contestant Jan-Jan Suan:

Mr. Willie Revillame, the producers of “Willing Willie” and TV5 sincerely and deeply apologize for the segment of the show featuring 6-year-old Jan-Jan Suan which viewers may have found offensive or in bad taste. We wish to stress that there was never any intention to humiliate or abuse Jan-Jan or any contestant on the show.

“Willing Willie” is a program that was conceptualized to bring joy and hope and shine the spotlight on ordinary Filipinos. The program aims to provide a venue for everyone to show their talents, tell their stories and make their dreams come true. This is the thrust of everyone involved in the program, particularly its host, Willie Revillame.

Like most contestants on the show, Jan-Jan, accompanied by his aunt, joined the program to showcase his talent and play in a game segment in the hope of bringing home big prizes. He has performed in the past in school programs and mall contests, and his performance in “Willing Willie” was completely voluntary and with the blessings of his parents. He appeared to be sad or even in tears, not because he was being forced to dance, but because he felt the dance was “serious” and he was playing a role. He did not want to smile because of his missing upper front teeth and because of the presence on the set of former basketball player Bonel Balingit who Jan-jan thought was a scary “giant”.

Again, TV5 and Wil Productions express profound regret for any insensitivity on their part, and wish to thank all those who have expressed concern. We are always grateful to be reminded of our obligations to the viewing public. In turn, we hope to make clear that the objective of the show has always been to bring joy and hope to Filipinos, whether they are participating on the show or viewing at home.

A YouTube video taken from the March 12 episode of “Willing Willie” ignited another controversy against its host Willie Revillame.

In the March 12 episode of “Willing Willie,” a 6-year-old boy named Jan Jan was made to dance like a macho dancer by host Willie Revillame in exchange for P10,000.00.

This segment of the episode has been uploaded on YouTube where it attracted thousands of viewers. Various people who were able to see the clip shared their disgust on the said incident via Facebook and Twitter.

The video made its way to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and caught their attention. They said the incident is clear case of child abuse.

Here is the press statement released by DSWD Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman which is addressed to TV5 Chairman Manny v. Pangilinan:

March 28, 2011

MR. MANNY V. PANGILINAN
Chairman
ABC Development Corporation

Dear Mr. Pangilinan:

This is with regard to the 12 March 2011 episode of your show “Willing Willie”, which was brought to my attention by several concerned citizens and groups. In the said episode, a six year-old boy named Jan-Jan Estrada was made to repeatedly perform dance moves usually done by adult dancers in indecent shows. The poor child was in tears and looked scared the entire time, as show host Willie Revillame poked fun at him and the audience laughed and cheered.

Under Republic Act No.7610, also known as “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act”, the term “child abuse” includes the following acts: “psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment,” and “any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of the child as a human being.”

Given that definition, it is unmistakable that what happened last 12 March 2011 to Jan-Jan Estrada was child abuse.

Persuading a little child to dance sexy adult dances in exchange for a measly sum, while he is being laughed at and ridiculed will definitely traumatize the child. What kind of values are we teaching our children through these shows, especially after Willie Revillame pushed Jan-Jan to do something against his will and then told him that it’s alright because he will receive money in exchange for it?

Given the foregoing, I am requesting that:

(1) Young children not be allowed to appear in Willing Willie and other similar shows in the network that cashes in on poverty;

(2) Host Willie Revillame be rebuked for his insensitive and deplorable actions.

There are limits to children appearing on television, and clearly, your 12 March 2011 episode did not respect the rights of the child and traumatized the six year-old boy. I also wish to raise my concern that the show tends to cash in on the plight of the poor. There are other ways of helping the poor without having to degrade their dignity and earn money out of it.

I hope you can act on this swiftly and I would appreciate a response from your good office.

Thank you.

Very truly yours,

(sgd.)

CORAZON JULIANO SOLIMAN
Secretary

Cc: Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares,
Chairman, MTRCB
