Now that the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival run is over, we bring you the final ranking of the highest-grossing pinoy films of the year.

The Star Cinema and Viva Films co-production, “You Changed My Life”, is the no. 1 local movie of 2009 and the only Pinoy film in history to surpassed the P200 million mark at the box office. The movie also sealed the box office king and queen status of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo for second year in a row.

In second place is the Vilma Santos comeback movie In My Life and in third place is the megastar and comedy queen starrer Best Friends Forever. Both films were produced by Star Cinema.

20 Top-Grossing Pinoy Movies at the Box Office for 2009

UPDATE: Apparently, our estimate of P70 million for the film “Ang Tanging Pamilya” was right on as Star Cinema released the official box-office gross of the film via PEP. The Ai Ai delas Alas-Erap Estrada comedy raked in P72 million. Star Cinema also revealed that their no. 1 movie of 2009, You Changed My Life, registered P208.8 million which is lower than what Box Office Mojo had reported. Anyway, this latest update will only make minor changes in the ranking. with the entry of Ang Tanging Pamilya at no. 10, the Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin starrer “Love Me Again” is no longer in the Top 10 highest-grossing pinoy films of the year.

Knowing, a movie about aliens and the end of the world, grabbed the no. 1 spot with P16.43 million haul last weekend. The Nicholas Cage movie also debuted at no. 1 in the US two weeks ago.

Another “Alien” movie occupied the 2nd spot. Dreamworks’ animated feature Monsters and Aliens hurtled P14.99 million last weekend.

Knowing is only the 2nd Hollywood movie to hit no. 1 in Philippine box-office this year so far. The first one was Underworld: Rise of the Lycans last January.

Star Cinema’s Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat is now the top-grossing Filipino movie of all time with a record box-office haul of P197 million. However, another Star Cinema movie You Changed My Life is on track to break that record.

Here’s our exclusive compilation of the highest-grossing Filipino movies so far:

14. SAKAL, SAKALI, SAKLOLO
(Star Cinema,2007) P122.90 million

15. YOU ARE THE ONE
(Star Cinema) P113.73 million

* 2 weeks figure. This movie is still screening in theaters.

Note: Figures are based from the period ending March 10, 2009 tally of Box Office Mojo. Later box-office reports are not yet posted.

Conclusion:

Sukob is no longer the highest-grossing local movie in Philippine history. The new record-holder is the MMFF entry “Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat” starring Ai Ai delas Alas with a final gross of P197 million in six weeks.

But the new record-holder is being threaten by another Star Cinema Movie. You Changed My Life, which is still showing nationwide, is posing a threat to Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat to be the all-time Top-Grossing Pinoy Film as it already accumalated P170 million in just two weeks of running.

The cast and crew of the Star Cinema and Viva Films movie held a victory party because You Changed My Life has already surpassed P170 million as of Sunday, March 7. It only needs P9 million to break the record established by the original film, A Very Special Love, which is P179.57 million.

The record that You Changed My Life needs to beat is P197 million which was established by by the MMFF movie Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat starring Ai Ai delas Alas. Now on its 3rd week, the Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz starrer should earn an additional P27 million in order to be the top-grossing Pinoy movie of all time.

Because of the success of the film, John Lloyd Cruz said he will share 10% of his bonus to the crew of the movie.

Star Cinema’s “You Changed My Life” starring box-office king and queen John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo hits a record-breaking P27 million last Saturday to be on track of surpassing the P100 million mark on its first week of screening.

Today, March 3, is the 7th day of screening concluding the first week run of the romantic comedy helmed by Cathy Garcia-Molina. On it’s first day alone, You Changed My Life has earned an estimate of P18 million (without padding) according to Star Cinema Booking and Distribution Department.

Although the film outfit did not reveal the box-office outcome for Thursday, Friday and Sunday, they are optimistic that the movie will hit P100 million in box-office receipts on Monday.

Based from the public’s overwhelming response in theaters across the country last weekend, You Changed My Life is on track to surpass the earning of A Very Special Love, the no. 1 movie of 2008. The first John Lloyd Cruz-Sarah Geronimo starrer has grossed a total of P180 million.

Lead star John Lloyd Cruz and director Cathy Garcia Molina are both in the United States for the film’s screening there. SNN reported Monday night that the US screening was very successful as the tickets were all sold out in Los Angeles.

“Ang nakakalungkot may mga grupo na lumapit sa amin. From Arizona pa sila…hindi na sila nakapanood,” John Lloyd Cruz said.

Officially as of 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night, the first day projected nationwide gross of the romantic film You Changed My Life was P18 million according to Star Cinema Booking and Distribution Department.

With the first day gross of P18 million nationwide, You Changed My Life is on track to surpass the first week gross of A Very Special Love which is P58,448,223 registered last August 3, 2008.

Take note that A Very Special Love is the biggest Filipino movie of 2008 raking a total of P180 million at the box-office. The stars of the movie, John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, were recently awarded Box Office King and Queen of the year by SM Cinemas.

Although John Lloyd Cruz is already assured of the Box Office King title from the Guillermo Mendoza Awards for the third consecutive year, it is not yet revealed if Sarah Geronimo will be the Box Office Queen since the title is also being contested by Ai Ai delas Alas for her Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) topper “Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat.”

In a text poll conducted by SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon with the proposition: Aling John Lloyd-Sarah Movie ang mas malakas ang first day? 11.16% of the respondents voted for A Very Special Love but 88.84% believed You Changed My Life has broken the record.

Both A Very Special Love and You Changed My Life received the highest grade of “A” from the Cinema Evaluation Board.
