Oscar Watch: ‘127 Hours’

From the Oscar-winning director of "Slumdog Millionaire" comes a thought-provoking film about an American mountain climber who amputated his own arm.

The film is based on the true story of Aron Ralston, the American mountain climber who amputated his own arm to free himself after being trapped by a boulder in Robbers Roost, Utah for nearly five days in May 2003. James Franco (Spiderman) stars as Ralston. The film is currently showing in Philippine theaters.

The film is written by Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy and produced by Christian Colson, who previously teamed up for Slumdog Millionaire. The film’s score is composed by Boyle’s previous collaborator on Slumdog Millionaire, A.R. Rahman.

It’s lead star, James Franco (Spider-Man), already won Best Actor in a number of award-giving bodies including Black Film Critics Circle, Central Ohio Film Critics Circle, Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association, Indiana Film Critics Association, Las Vegas Film Critics Society, and New York Film Critics Online.

Franco is vying against Javier Bardem (Biutiful), Jeff Bridges (True Grit), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech).

Here is the list of nominations received by 127 Hours for this year’s Academy Awards (Oscars):

Best Picture
Best Actor – James Franco
Best Adapted Screenplay – Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy
Best Original Score – A. R. Rahman
Best Original Song – A. R. Rahman, Dido and Rollo Armstrong for “If I Rise”
