Newbies Mara Lopez and Alex Medina Top Acting Honors at the 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival

Lead stars of the “Scorpio Nights” tribute film “Palitan” by Ato Bautista, Mara Lopez and Alex Medina won the Best Actress and Best Actor award respectively during the awards night of the 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival.

The film about power play, love, lust, and deceit marked the first leads and most daring roles of Lopez, daughter of former beauty queen Maria Isabel Lopez and Medina, son of veteran actor Pen Medina. Also included in the film’s main cast is veteran actor Mon Confiado.

Another big winner was the first feature debut of Kevin Dayrit’s, “Catnip” which bagged the awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Music. “Catnip” stars Lauren Young and Maxene Magalona and tells the story of two friends who despite their rifts and differences find comfort with each other. The people behind “Catnip” were the same ones behind the controversial indie film “MNL143”.

Major film awards Best Picture and Best Cinematography were awarded to “Pascalina” by Pam Miras and “Anak Araw” by Gym Lumbera respectively. Both films were the directors’ first feature debuts.

The 2012 Cinema One Originals awards night was held recently at the ABS-CBN Studio 1 and was hosted by Matteo Guidicelli and Megan Young.
