Top 10 Most Tweeted Hashtags in the Philippines for 2017

The hashtag was originally designed to ‘tag’ or categorize Tweets but over the years, it has become a tool to discover various topics that one may be passionate about. Nowadays, it shows #WhatsHappening in the world and in the Philippines, and it reflects what is important to the community.

Here are the Top 10 Most Tweeted Hashtags in the Philippines for 2017 (as of Dec. 4, 2017):

1. #KCAPinoyStar

This hashtag was widely used during this year’s Kids’ Choice Award. Nadine Lustre (@hellobangsie), Janella Salvador (@superjanella), Janine Gutierrez (@janinegutierrez‏), and Liza Soberano (@lizasoberano) were all nominated for the Kids’ Choice Award Favorite Pinoy Star. This year, Nadine Lustre took home the orange blimp as she was named #KCAPinoyStar.

2. #NadineLustre

Nadine Lustre rose to fame with her role in Diary ng Panget in 2014 but in 2017, her strength is what caught the attention of the public, prompting them to use #NadineLustre in their Tweets. The young actress stood up for herself when many criticized her about her living arrangements with her boyfriend James Reid. Months later, Nadine told her fans that she was dealing with depression; fans used the hashtags #keepgoing #NadineLustre together to send messages of support and admiration her way.

3. #MissUniverse

Two Miss Universe pageants were held this year. The 65th Miss Universe was met with much anticipation and excitement as the pageant took place in Manila. Over 34.6 million Tweets from celebrities and fans alike drove the massive conversation — the hashtags #MissPhilippinesUniverse2016 and #65thMissUniverse were Tweeted countless of times to cheer for the Philippines’ representative. Maxine Media (@maxinemedina)‏ was the center of the talks on Twitter as she represented the Philippines in the esteemed beauty pageant. The 66th Miss Universe (#66thMissUniverse) that was held in Las Vegas also saw outpouring support as the whole nation rallied on Twitter to vote for Rachel Peters (@rachelpetersx), Miss Universe Philippines. The Filipino community also thanked Peters and expressed their gratitude to her for representing the country brilliantly and for reaching the Top 10 in this year’s #MissUniverse.

4. #PushAwardsMaywards

The Push Award is given to several artists who push past the limit of social media and this year Maymay Entrata (@maymayentrata07) and Edward Barber (@Barber_Edward_) dominated Twitter and brought home the Group/Tandem Award.

5. #PushAwardsKathniels

KathNiel did not win this year’s Group/Tandem award but they did not make it easy for MayWard and the other groups to win. This hashtag was the second most used hashtag on Twitter from August 20 to September 24.

6. #LizaSoberano

Liza’s simplicity and humility are the qualities that drew fans to her. The 19-year old actress and model gained prominence in the entertainment industry after starring in the hit teleserye Forevermore. Liza honed her skills throughout her years in showbiz; fans celebrated her role in the movie My Ex and Whys and the role of Darna, a female Filipino superhero in comics, by using the hashtag #LizaSoberano.

7. #NBAFinals

The finale battle between Cleveland Cavaliers (@cavs) and the Golden State Warriors (@warriors) was considered a big event for Filipino basketball lovers. Thusly, the #NBAFinals hashtag amassed countless of Tweets and posts from fans, generating a big conversation on Twitter. Meanwhile, the new NBA season was welcomed on Twitter with nearly 76 million #NBA-related Tweets globally (with posts including from the Philippines) since the finals in June. The opening games of the season began on a high note but saw an abrupt turn of events when Boston Celtics’ (@celtics) Gordon Hayward (@gordonhayward) had an unfortunate accident. NBA players, Filipino personalities and NBA fans jumped in the conversation and posted Tweets that show their support for the injured athlete.

8. #StarMagicBallFanFave

Countless of A-list celebrities graced the red carpet in this year’s ball yet only a handful stole the Twitter spotlight; MayWard (Maymay Entrata, @maymayentrata07, and Edward Barber, @Barber_Edward_), KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo, @bernardokath, and Daniel Padilla, @imdanielpadilla) were some of the nominees in this year’s Star Magic Ball Fan Fave. But the fans have spoken and Kisses Delavin (@delavinkisses‏) was heralded as the Star Magic Ball Fan Fave of 2017.

9. #BTSWingsTourInManila

Korean boy band Bangtan Boys or commonly known as BTS (@bts_twt) held a two-day concert in Manila from May 6 to 7. BTS proves that they have a massive fanbase in the Philippines as A.R.M.Y. (Adorable Representative M.C for Youth), fans of BTS, generated over 3.4 million Tweets in 2 days!

10. #Exordiuminmanila

Thousands of screaming fans filled the Big Dome last February 25 as the Korean-Chinese boy band EXO (@weareoneEXO) had their EXO’rDIUM concert in Manila. The boys performed their biggest hits from their song ‘Mama’ to Yeng Constantino’s ‘Hawak Kamay’. EXO’s love for the Filipinos did not stop there; Suho reached out for a banner and the rest of the boys recited “Iniirog kita, bes” (We love you, friend) back to the audience which caused thousands of delighted fans to scream their hearts out.
